I will start by apologising as don’t want to upset anyone, it’s really a lighthearted post, but I have to smile when I hear certain surnames, in the town where I grew up we had some funny ones namely lol excuse the pun, Gotobed. Bearcock . Bowcock. Babcock, Higginbottom .the funniest was two males one was Ivor Wright and the other Ivor Whitehead honest to god it’s true,

Worst surname I’ve ever heard is Duff-dick! Sorry but it’s true!!

Nothing funny about it when you are a child being teased. As an adult, the comments become boring, everyone thinking their joke is so original !!

Several months ago at eldest daughter's house where she had her sisters children (my grand-children) the children were bored and wanted to play a game about funny names.
We came up with many that had the children in fits of laughter, one they really liked was Mr Farquiharse which they were repeating as Mr. Far keyarse and they belly laughed for ages. So sorry to any foreign people but sometimes these names can make us laugh so much, I knew the name from a man that used to come into our coffee shop.

I was teased, Singlegrannie.

I think it made me a bit more feisty and confident.

It's my first name that was unusual

All 3 of my children also have unusual names.

They've done OK

When I was a child we had a couple of dentists called Dr Press and Dr Pulley. However some of the funniest name combinations are nothing to do with thoughtless parents but with marriage. My dad worked with a lady called Ruth who married a Mr Leserge (and never realised how hilarious her name became until he said it out loud and my mum and I fell about laughing). And I have told my niece Emma that she is NOT to marry a man called Royds!

These are so funny! I had to say Theresa Green out loud before it clicked though!
Mine is tame in comparison, but one of my best friends at school was called Annette Kertain.

endlessstrife Mon 16-Dec-19 12:51:52

We had a dentist at our practice called Mr. Chu!

endlessstrife Mon 16-Dec-19 12:52:48

Of course there’s always Eileen Dover, but I never met her!

NannyG123 Mon 16-Dec-19 12:56:04

My husband previous dentist was called mr Payne..

DotMH1901 Mon 16-Dec-19 13:02:05

My maiden name is Menzies and I got used to it being mispronounced on a regular basis, one of the ones I thought was quite nice when I got a letter addressed to Miss Merryeyes! Thought things would improve when I married and became a Holden, until at a crowded GP surgery appointments room I heard the receptionist shouting for Mrs Holdem!

Grammaretto Mon 16-Dec-19 13:04:01

I'm sorry too Thomas . It can't have been funny for your DC.
My son, if any consolation, wanted me to change his first name when he started school because it was a little unusual. I didn't and he is happy with it as an adult.

So many people with job appropriate surnames, it must be more than coincidence. grin

Revis Mon 16-Dec-19 13:19:26

My mum had a friend called Elsie May Stripp

At a place where I once worked in the 'infernal' directory was listed a Mr Careless, Miss Hasty and Mrs Quick - not all in the same department.
As children, we used to laugh at Mr Musty and Mr Mouldy.
I'd hate a surname like Daft.

mrswoo Mon 16-Dec-19 13:38:40

When I worked for BA back in the ‘70’s the planning manager was a Mr Muddle

My ex. worked with a fellow teacher called Wayne Kerr. I think we all know what the kids called him.

Granfran Mon 16-Dec-19 13:59:32

A solicitor who worked for my uncle was called Crook.

puppytoe Mon 16-Dec-19 14:00:55

One of my local councillors is called Bob Sleigh. I don't thimk he is embarrassed by his name as he has only just stepped down as Leader of the Council.

Diggingdoris Mon 16-Dec-19 14:01:05

My old maths teacher was Mr Measures.
Many years ago I had customers called Donald Duckling and Ben Hurr! I kid you not! What were their parents thinking of?

lovebeigecardigans1955 Mon 16-Dec-19 14:03:13

I've just remembered Dr De'Ath which was obviously pronounced 'Dee-Ath' but as children we called him Dr Death -but not to his face.

A Cock
Hold for collection.

There was also a young lady called Miss Bishopsprick ( I would have had that changed by deed poll)?

RosesAreRed21 Mon 16-Dec-19 14:29:41

I once worked with a lovely lady and her name was Mary ....... and her surname was Christmas

Honestly - that’s the truth

gillyknits Mon 16-Dec-19 14:51:25

I remember an Eva Hoy marring Thomas Lowe.

Grannyknot Mon 16-Dec-19 15:24:55

I have a good friend whose surname is Hiscock. I think I may have stuck with my maiden name ...

On that note - my daughter didn't take her husband's name when they married - simply (she said) because she preferred the one she had! Fair enough we all thought, including, thankfully, her husband!
