I will start by apologising as don’t want to upset anyone, it’s really a lighthearted post, but I have to smile when I hear certain surnames, in the town where I grew up we had some funny ones namely lol excuse the pun, Gotobed. Bearcock . Bowcock. Babcock, Higginbottom .the funniest was two males one was Ivor Wright and the other Ivor Whitehead honest to god it’s true,

I had a dentist called Mr Pain. My maiden name was very unusual and funny but too outing to reveal it. My son-in-law also has a very usual surname but my daughter kept her dad's surname on marriage and the children have her name too...thank goodness.

I've nearly wet myself laughing at some of these names but I keep repeating Theresa Green out loud and can't see why it is funny!!!

HillyN Mon 16-Dec-19 18:33:29

I used to teach a Robert Soule which wasn't funny until I decided one day to call the register using initial and surname. Oops!

I used to work for a travel agents & we were always needing names & titles to book flights etc. Regular clients of ours were Mr & Mrs Bates- nothing wrong with that & neither is there with Miss Bates, but when it comes to the young master of the house....I'm afraid we often had a childish titter about that!!

There used to be a medical centre near us which had Drs Badger, Hare and Fox - and when I was pregnant with my son, my consultant was a Dr Boddy. I also know of someone called Annette Curtan, and there used to be a local councillor here called Dick Small!

Where I work we’ve had a Mrs O’looney, Mrs Wilfart and a Mrs foreskin. This has caused much hilarity in the office. I’d have to change my name ............

Some years ago I worked with a lady getting married to a 'Ponsanby'. She refused to take it and and changed their name to 'Richards' by deed pole.

So, I can understand why some people double-barrel their children’s surname, but why would you do it to your child when they end up becoming a Parkin-Ryde? I actually thought it was a joke but sadly it wasn’t.

Nessa19 Mon 16-Dec-19 22:59:28

John Thomas Upham is the one I remember

I saw a van in Wales with signage on the side "F.W. Fuchs & Sons". I have no idea what his trade was but I'd love to employ him, just to see his van outside on my drive!

A practitioner in South Africa that I went to was Willie Holden... Unfortunately it didn't go down well when my notes were transferred over to England and the next practitioner was shocked. I had to explain that Willie is an Afrikaans name for William....

A Methodist minister I once knew did some work somewhere in Africa, where they used names that they liked the sound of, such as Helicopter and Jam Sandwich.
