I will start by apologising as don’t want to upset anyone, it’s really a lighthearted post, but I have to smile when I hear certain surnames, in the town where I grew up we had some funny ones namely lol excuse the pun, Gotobed. Bearcock . Bowcock. Babcock, Higginbottom .the funniest was two males one was Ivor Wright and the other Ivor Whitehead honest to god it’s true,

This was true, but I didn't believe it when I was told that his wife was called Hazel.
Until recently my physio was called David Essex.

Many years ago, I knew a guy by the name of 'William Williams' - unusual, but NOT uncommon.

One day, however, he came into the office where I worked to complete a form.

Where it asked for 'First Name' - he put 'William Williams'.
Where it asked for 'Surname' - he put 'Williams' ....................... among my work colleagues, he was then forever known as 'Triple Willie' tchwink!

I worked with a Theresa Green once, quite common I think.
Our school honours board included Vera Willey and Ina Buckett.

Doris Kit Cat
Myra Smellie Dick
Treasure Ireland

I worked for the NHS and we had a doctor called Dr Killman.

Another was Mr Chackravarty and he changed it to Mr Chackrabarty because his children were being teased at school.

My daughter heard of a Mr Abdo Fahrty.

A lot of foreign people think they have perfectly good names not realising how amusing or rude they are to us Brits.

Thomas67 Mon 16-Dec-19 11:10:21

I have an unfortunate last name. Sometimes I feel like being rude to people who think they are being funny making comments about it. I just give them a look and hope they apologise.
My children suffered comments from teachers , medical staff and anyone who they had to give their name to.
Stop before you make your so called funny comments , you are being unkind not funny.
My children have changed their name.

What a wonderful thread!

I have had such a laugh reading them.

Wouldn’t it be funny if someone recognised their maiden name from some of these school days ones and came on here to say “that was me “ !

My neighbours changed their name by Deed Poll from Alcock to Ainsley and I had to have it explained to me.

Thomas67 - the OP has already apologised in advance. I'm afraid you can't stop people being amused by something, although I can understand your feelings if you have had problems with your name.

HootyMcOwlface Mon 16-Dec-19 11:42:16

Our music teacher at school was Miss Trumper.
My doctor was Dr Payne (he was very nice actually).
