Which country would you choose to live if you couldn’t live where you are?

If you had to flee the country you are currently living in, which country would you choose to live in? I would happily live in Ireland, Italy, France or Canada - all places I’ve lived in or have family. I wouldn’t want to live in Australia - too hot or the USA - too many guns. But haven’t visited either, so I suppose it boils down to the familiar.

France.

Back to New Zealand for me.

Annodomini, Scotland is another country now. I mean this nicely. We are part of the UK , but we are a different country. The same way our neighbours and friends in England are.

Scotland has just been voted the most beautiful country in the world in a poll of readers of Rough Guides. Runners up were Canada and New Zealand. Seems to indicate that there is a general view that the combination of lochs/lakes, glens and mountains, equals the best scenery.

Well, I am happy where I am in Denmark, although the summers are not always as nice and warm as I would like.

If I had to choose somewhere else , I have always wanted to live in Spain, but can't as we would have to pay income tax both there and here.

If I were young, I think I would seriously consider the Netherlands.

grandtanteJE65 I seem to remeber that Denmark was the happiest country in a poll a while back.

humptydumpty Fri 06-Dec-19 13:49:42

remember, not remeber

whitewavemark thanks. Lucky you! Will keep working on my OH.. ...
RosesareRed I'm sorry you felt isolated here. I would have expected people to be more friendly.

Italy is lovely but too hot in summer. Perhaps I could winter there.

The US is not full of guns as it seems to be portrayed by the media.
I have been in the US for almost 20 years and I have yet to see one or be involved in an event where a gun was used.

I live in London and love it but in the winter I am in the Caribbean staying with my son until March. The older we get the more fraught such trips become. You must make sure you have meds that you cannot get in some countries, long haul flying is not fun! You cannot get some foods we regard as common and the cost of living is high.

If I had to choose other countries to live in they would be Australia where I had many happy years. France because there are so many beautiful areas, Holland because the people are welcoming and the Dutch speak English. I do like Canada and USA but I would be reluctant to live in either of them. If Scotland becomes independent I think I could enjoy living there and I find Scots people very friendly.!

Wales! Then I would still be near England.?
After that, Canada and NZ.

Horatia Fri 06-Dec-19 14:14:17

Bavaria.

Bijou Fri 06-Dec-19 14:26:55

Provence, France where my husband and I spent so many happy years. Too old to go anywhere now.

Mcauliffe27 Fri 06-Dec-19 15:39:54

New England it’s so beautiful, or maybe Spain for the heat not sure

New Zealand, North Island for me. Or if travel were to be restricted in any way (health/money/time) any of the Islands off the coast of Gt Britain - preferably Northwards i.e.Western Isles, Orkney, Shetland.

My hubby and I spent our honeymoon there. Think of The Lake District, but with far fewer towns and villages and almost no people on the roads! North Island is full of lakes and mountains, fresh air and blue skies. The people are friendly and the scenery is stunning!

Granny23, I would have to be dragged out of Scotland too, but if I was, then it would be Turkey for me. I seem to be the only one who has mentioned it so far, but I absolutely love the country - the genuine warmth and friendliness of its people, the sheer variety and beauty of the country itself, and the food, which is so under-rated.

farview Fri 06-Dec-19 16:51:22

Australia (Pottsville NSW) son and family live there..its beautiful..would take all my other DC &DGC with me...

Grammaretto Fri 06-Dec-19 17:15:16

I used to think I would be happy anywhere as long as my loved ones were nearby.
I still feel somewhat like that but have been in Scotland so long I can't imagine living anywhere else now.

I have a DB in Denmark and that's great and a DS and DGC in NZ and love it there. I go to France most years and this year was in Ireland - loved it.

All the places I have been on holiday from the Scottish Islands (and they are all different) to Australia are all great.

South Africa has an almost perfect climate --but politically!
My Sudanese friend swears his country is far more beautiful than Scotland.

QuaintIrene Fri 06-Dec-19 17:23:42

I don’t know. I have only been to Paris on a school trip. I used to go to relatives in Northern Ireland as a very young girl. I loved it there.

DotMH1901 Fri 06-Dec-19 17:51:04

@Anniebach Perhaps we could swop - I live in Shropshire but would like to live in Wales again smile Failing that I would love to move to Scotland

SueDonim Fri 06-Dec-19 18:05:11

Bali for me. It’s so relaxed and the people are wonderful. I could be tempted by Madeira, too, with its abundant gardens.

Merryweather Fri 06-Dec-19 18:12:23

Norway, Canada or Ireland.
Norway is such a fabulous country. So clean and the air so fresh with beautiful countryside and fjords to investigate and explore.

BlueSky Fri 06-Dec-19 18:41:29

France I love everything about it: language people lifestyle, my choice for holidays every time!

4allweknow Fri 06-Dec-19 18:54:34

Septimia. Have to break it to you; Orkney isn't a country. I know if you travel from the south by the time you get there you think you have travelled half way round the world.

Grandmama Fri 06-Dec-19 20:21:59

Anywhere in Italy or south of France.
