Which country would you choose to live if you couldn’t live where you are?

it really depends where, Italy is very very varied in 100s of ways, climate too.

For myself it would have to be Italy, then the French countryside - to develop a château of course, and shop in the local food markets. Bliss...

The Netherlands - we spent about 18 months in total over 3 trips on working holidays there in our 20s. Let's just say the ethos of that country on certain issues was a perfect fit for us. Having said that, there is no place like home - which is the UK and, more specifically, England (south and north, we have lived in both).

It was not my choice to come to New Zealand but having landed here I fell in love with the place.

However, I have had to address this question as both my sons went back to the UK to work and talked about settling there again.

So it would be back to Cornwall for me and before anyone tells me Cornwall is not a country, there are some hard-core Kernow people who insist it is - and not a part of England. I respect their views.

I don't deny they exist but in my 45 years here I haven't met many like that and I've worked mostly with refugees, immigrants and Maori, so would certainly have encountered it in those areas if it were rife.

Certainly the overall feeling in the country is not one of racism, the recent nation-wide outrage at the mosque bombings was a case in point, with people speaking out against it in huge numbers; taking to the streets in their thousand and raising millions in suppport.

Nor has misogyny and/or sexism been an issue and as it is something I feel strongly about, I'd be trumpeting against it, were it commoin here.

Glamanana I used to live near Denia, in the Jalon Valley and agree with you about Altea. Spain has fabulous lakes and mountains in the Cantabria area. It is such a diverse country with every type of scenery.

If not Spain, I would choose either Holland or New Zealand. My parents lived in Holland for 10 years and I think it is a country that has its priorities right.

Germany. It’s a beautiful country where everything runs smoothly and it’s run by intelligent, tolerant politicians.

Canada for me, partly because my brother lives there.
But I fell in love with Australia when I went there because of the friendly openess of the people.
Having been to Germany several times because I have old friends there, I think I could quite happily live there. It's such a well run country.
I quite fancy parts of America too, but the gun laws are off-putting. And the present leader...

It would have to be Australia, because three of my ‘children’ live there. I’m visiting now, and will be back in May, when my latest GC will be born.
The climate doesn’t much suit me, though. On hot days I have to either stay in with the air-con on, or migrate to the nearest shopping mall to keep cool, and I hate shopping! Any exercise has to be taken very early in the morning. Not ideal for someone who prefers cold weather.

It's nearly separate from the RUK BradfordLass (but not quite!)

A Greek island - Kefalonia or Paxos but not sure I could get used to the isolation in Winter. Failing those I would opt for Granada, Spain - would love to be able to wander around the Alhambra at will whenever I fancied it.

Gibraltar or Wales for me my son lives in Gib and I love to visit it’s such a friendly safe place, it’s a quick flight for the rest of the family to visit and a walk across the border to Spain, you can see the snow topped mountains from the Rock and many beautiful beaches.

Certain places in Bulgaria appeal to me, definitely with a sea view ?. I think I'd follow the sun. I think I'm suffering from SAD at the moment.....

New Zealand as my son lives there. However they wouldn’t take me because of my age and to be allowed to live there you have to have a large amount of savings or an income.

Guns are a problem in the US, but mostly in crime infested areas. I've lived here for 66 years, including 30 in journalism, and have never been near a shooting to my knowledge, except legal hunting and target practice. This said, we have far too many but many of us don't feel the impact.
Wish we had the NHS, good trains and theater like the UK. I'd move there in a minute if not for grandkids.
