Looks like the Daily Mail is being sued by them regarding a private letter from the Duchess to her estranged father.

Who is behind the letter being shown to the paper? An unhappy member of their staff? Or Mr. Markle maybe?

lemongrove Fri 04-Oct-19 08:48:31

Agreed SirC......when you meet somebody in person but
That doesn’t including saying so on a forum!
The utter PC madness that prevails sometimes.......

SirChenjin Fri 04-Oct-19 09:01:32

'PC madness' is just an excuse for ignorance or a reluctance to change with the times. Why mention someone's (ie a black woman) colour at all? It's othering by white people - I'm willing to bet you're white and have never had anyone from another race say you have a lovely skin colour.

Eglantine21 Fri 04-Oct-19 09:03:57

Well on the whole it’s probably better not to pass comments on a strangers physical appearance. But I’ll take a spontaneous compliment. A couple of days ago a man in the garden centre said I had a lovely smile. ?

The problem is that people get so nervous about saying the wrong thing they don’t react with you naturally. So actually all this “correctness” makes it difficult to just treat people as people.

Eglantine21 Fri 04-Oct-19 09:06:48

Actually in Vietnam during a dress fitting my friend was told, “ Oh you have lovely white skin colour. It go with everything”

SirChenjin Fri 04-Oct-19 09:12:43

But not in the UK and not by someone from a race that tends not to experience racial prejudice.

grapefruitpip Fri 04-Oct-19 09:14:33

Sirch, you are wasting your time mate but good try.

sunseeker Fri 04-Oct-19 09:15:00

I think I may have posted this before but a friend once mentioned to me that he found it was nearly always white middle class people who were offended if anyone mentioned his colour - he said just because he was black didn't mean he could determine whether what someone said was offensive or not.

I am white and my colour has been commented on. At parties where we were among the few white people attending there would often be jokes about us standing near the bathroom door as markers.

sunseeker Fri 04-Oct-19 09:16:21

that should read "didn't mean he couldn't determine"

lemongrove Fri 04-Oct-19 09:18:54

Since I have Celtic pale skin I admire much darker skin colours, to me, it’s just more attractive.
My (Indian) friend who is very honest at all times, tells me to sit in the sun more to look better.grin
So, please stop with the ‘right on’ comments.

SirChenjin Fri 04-Oct-19 09:20:09

And I have a black friend and colleagues who prefers that people don't mention their colour in conversation at all because it's not relevant

maddyone Fri 04-Oct-19 09:20:25

Calendar girl

You may be right, but you are offering an opinion. When I watched the footage, I didn’t see any sign of a curtsy from Meghan to the Queen, therefore as far as I can see, it’s my opinion that she didn’t curtsy. I thought it strange, as it is royal protocol for a royal bride to curtsy to the Queen on her way out of the church.

I don’t really agree with all this bowing and curtsying to be honest, but if someone decides to marry into the royal family, then they must follow the protocol, it’s that simple.

maddyone Fri 04-Oct-19 09:26:43

I agree with Lemongrove in that whilst it would be bad form to comment on the appearance of a person, especially their skin colour, face to face, unless the person was known extremely well to the commentator, on a forum such as this, it is not a problem.

There’s nothing so strange as life is there? When people become very suntanned when on holiday ie brown, there seems to be no problem for others to say in a complimentary way, that the person is really brown, and an assumption is made that therefore it was a very good holiday.

lemongrove Fri 04-Oct-19 09:28:29

SirC ...I know from long experience that you (and a couple of others on here) go on and on like dogs with a bone....so,
With that in mind: am sure you are right on all subjects, whether you are talking utter rot or not hardly matters, I will bow to your superior knowledge.

SirChenjin Fri 04-Oct-19 09:30:18

Don’t want to get into an argy-bargy about Meghan’s curtsey, but have just looked on you tube, they definitely did bow and curtsey, but the wide angle made it very easy to miss, I saw it on a ceiling view.
Harry bowed his head, she sank to the floor.

She gets slated for so much, some of it justified, but she definitely followed protocol on that occasion.
Not my opinion, but a fact.

maddyone Fri 04-Oct-19 11:07:38

Calendargirl, I have had a look, and you may be right. For a brief second, filmed from the ceiling view, if you watch extremely carefully, it is possible to see that they might have bowed and curtsied.

Apologies if I was wrong.

annsixty Fri 04-Oct-19 11:39:56

I was once on a training day for a charity I was involved with.
We were in groups of about 10 and we were asked to take a name and describe the person named to the others.
I drew out the name of the only black person in the group.
Should I start with her colour? I decided that was too easy so I mentioned her height, she was tall, her dress sense , which was good, when I paused she said in a bored voice, and I am black.
I felt embarrassed and awkward.
Does that say more about me than her?

grapefruitpip Fri 04-Oct-19 11:44:46

It says you bothered to consider the feelings of the person which is admirable.
