What are your facilities like ?

A five bedroom, detached house. Downstairs cloakroom, upstairs: large guest bathroom, family bathroom containing bath with shower over and basin, separate loo, en-suite to master bathroom. I am very lucky to have en-suite to myself and DH uses family bathroom

Don’t forget -it’s DETACHED.

Gosh, how did the people in the mining valleys manage with just a tin bath in front of the fire and probably one outside loo.!!!
Consider ourselves lucky.

We have a house bathroom and an en-suite upstairs and a cloakroom and what we call ‘the garden loo’. This one is in the boot room which means when we are working in the garden we do not have to go into the main house to go to the loo. Very useful it is too if we have anyone working at the house they can use this loo.

For god’s sake- I seldom bother to comment on G.N. No doubt, if my daughter-in-law hated me, I was obese, my husband controlled me, we lived in a shoe box and survived on £90.00 per week, I would be welcome in this group. Envy and jealousy make for bitter old women. If my house had only one loo then our guests could easily pee outside. I’ve done this in the past!

@ crazyH and as well as that the Dad got in first and cleaned up, then other members of the family in turn. Into the same water.
Then the bath had to emptied and cleaned out !

I also grew up in a house with an outside, very draughty toilet, and no bathroom. We were bathed in the tin bath in front of the fire, as children, and washed at the kitchen sink as adults.
My present home (54 years residence) has a small bathroom. We never used the bath, in recent years. Just the over-bath shower. When my husband became ill we managed to fit a small downstairs toilet into the kitchen extension/utility room. I have been SO glad of it since I had my hip replacement 3 months ago, and also the walk-in shower which I finally managed to afford last year, after having the bath removed.
One bathroom, and the downstairs loo, is more than enough for me to clean. I couldn't be doing with all these ensuites etc.

I always got in first in our family.

I grew up in a house with an outside toilet at the bottom of the yard although someone at some point had installed a 'bathroom' in my bedroom with a bath and ancient gas geezer which exploded every time it was turned on. When I was 8 we moved to a flat above a shop - the toilet was outside downstairs and the bath was under a wooden shelf which had to be pulled out if we wanted a bath - this was in what was laughingly called a kitchen. My dad installed a new bathroom and a kitchen/diner - thinking back that was quite a job - he was brilliant at DIY

CrazyH my 91yo mother was born and raised in the Welsh valleys but her family always had a bathroom! They weren't well off (GF worked for the mines although he wasn't a miner) and never owned their own home but always had indoor facilities.

She said they moved house all the time. GF would hear of a 'better' house to rent and off they'd go!

Haha! This is a funny post. I grew up with lots of bathrooms and loos but now I only have 2 bathrooms and a downstairs shower /loo

In my first married life I lived in the Canaries. In an old cow shed with no internal running water and no electricity. Bit grim really. But managed to shower with an old garden hose outside with a large plastic bag as shower curtain.

Luckily we had a few friends who were living in the 20th century and I'd regularly shower myself and my my baby in their apartments.

My lovely dad did a lot of DIY, and claimed to be brilliant. Truth to tell, he might have installed that gas geyser of Willow's that exploded every time it was turned on.

I wouldn't have wanted to get in the tin bath after him. He used to come home covered in coal dust, just his eyes showing.

I grew up in a Forestry Commission 'tied' ( rented) cottage built in 1948- we had three bedrooms, two toilets- one up one down and separate bathroom upstairs with washhouse and workshop/coal and wood store next to the kitchen- pretty luxurious for those times although I didn't appreciate this until we bought our first house, an ex tied labourer's 2 up 2 down thatched cottage with one, downstairs, freezing cold, bath and toilet in the same room!

I suppose that, if you have umpteen bathrooms, you can afford a cleaner.
I didn’t know that”facilities” meant bathrooms and loos (and tin baths) I live in a 2-up, 2-down cottage and for 25 years have had only a downstairs bathroom.
Today my lovely builder finished the new upstairs bathroom and, when the paint dries, I shall try out the shower.
Oh bliss, especially when I need the loo at the middle of the night!

Well, I know I've come a long way, and I am truly grateful for the fact.

Well we've gone into reverse now. More downwardly mobile .

Is it, though? An outside toilet and a tin bath wasn’t uncommon for the Northern working class of the 1950s. I’d be very surprised if I heard of anyone with just those facilities now. Thank goodness.

Or for Southerners in our case Maggie. Although council houses were coming in for many. We just didn't have one.

Sorry, Gonegirl, of course it wasn’t just up North. We were on a council house list, but we never made it to the top.

We live in a bungalow, have two loos, one in the bathroom where there is a shower over the bath,the bath must go as it is getting difficult to climb in and out of it.
Two toilets is great as we are getting older
