What are your facilities like ?

Used to have a family bathroom with walk in shower, loo, bath, bidet and sink upstairs and a cloakroom with loo and basin downstairs and “gardeners toilet” accessed from the back door with loo and basin. However as we’ve never had a gardener we have removed that loo and turned it into a small utility between the kitchen and back door. Will downsize in a few years looking for 2 loos again but smaller garden and maybe no bath just a shower, preferably in a bungalow as the knees don’t like stairs now and can’t get in and out of a bath. Definitely don’t want a flat - even ground floor - don’t want to live on top of people and like a private garden and parking.

We have a downstairs bathroom with bath, shower, hand-basin and toilet and installed an upstairs toilet and hand-basin when we moved in, as our bedroom is upstairs and neither of us want to traipse downstairs during the night, or if we are ill.

For years we lived in a flat with only one toilet and a shower cabinet. The house I grew up in had a downstairs toilet without a hand-basin and an upstairs bathroom. DH grew up in a flat with a W.C. but no bathroom, DH and his father went to the public bath-house on Thursday evenings, which were men only, his mother, sisters and grandmother went on Wednesdays, ladies only. The other days they strip-washed at stipulated times in the kitchen with the door in to the rest of the flat closed.

We downsized house & garden but went from three loos to four! (still trying to work it out). Very good when the family come though?

We extended the 4 bed house we've been in over 30 years about 20 years ago and added a large utility room at the back of the garage with an en-suite above it which is bigger than the main bathroom. It has a bath, walk in shower, toilet and sink. We removed the bath in the main bathroom a few years ago and put a large corner shower cubicle in it's place. Neither of us have a bath now but it is handy for the grandsons to use the en-suite when they come to stay. We moved the downstairs toilet to the side of the extension and the old one now houses the fridge freezer - it was boarded up for some time and used as a big cupboard but took the door off and it's a perfect size.

We bought a 3 bed bungalow last year to renovate and when looking an en-suite was a must - as someone mentioned they're not that common but this one had one with a shower that wasn't big enough to climb in! Husband designed a refurb taking out the airing cupboard (hot water didn't work anyway) and fitting in a corner shower, sink and toilet. We did a mirror image in the main bathroom - both were in such a disgusting state they were unusable as they were.

A few years ago we had a 2 bed apartment which only had the one bathroom with a shower over the bath. There was a huge cupboard in the hall behind the bathroom wall so we had the builders put an extra toilet and sink in there before they'd finished the block which was great. When the couple who eventually bought it came to look the lady couldn't understand why we needed 2 toilets and was adamant they would take it out - often wonder if they ever did

We had 4 beds en-suite and combined bathroom in the old family house when the DCs lived at home,we now have one bedroom and wetroom with loo & washbasin so easy to deal with for just the two of us,having one bedroom makes it easy to say no to anyone who wants to stay perfect

3 bed house, main bathroom upstairs plus loo downstairs. 2 people living here and you wouldn't believe how many times both rooms are occupied at the same time!

One bathroom.

I always thought an extra, possibly en suite, would be nice. Until we had a house with three bathrooms and a downstairs loo. All the extra cleaning did my head in. Got to the point where I banned daughter and husband from using two of them. One became the hamsters room!

I am considering a loo / sink / shower in the possible loft extension, on the off chance daughter and grandson are living with me permanently. Currently, one bathroom is fine. But if we live together into his teeanage years I'll want more space away from them.

Downstairs loo, upstairs ensuite shower and loo to main bedroom, and family bathroom. Three of us in the house, can be nine when family staying over, as previous poster has said, very often all three loos occupied at the same time!

I have a downstairs cloakroom, bathroom and 2 en suite bedrooms so 4 loos in total. So I don’t have far to go when I’m desperate

We have a four bedroom detached house with a bathroom, an en-suite and a cloakroom downstairs. The house was built in the early 70s when en-suites were relatively new.

I have 4 bedrooms, 3 en-suites. Bathroom and 2 downstairs loos. So 5 loos. I have people staying quite a lot. So no one has to share a loo or bathroom. I love cleaning fortunately.

Why are you afraid of the toilets/bathrooms you have?

One upstairs, one downstairs.

When I was a child we had our loo at the end of the garden and no bathroom.

Four bedrooms, one bathroom, one downstairs loo. When my children were at home we managed to use the bathroom in the morning as though it had been choreographed !!! Would like a second bathroom though .

I read the article by Kevin McCloud about the number of bathrooms per house ie more bathrooms than bedrooms with disbelief but obviously there are people out there who to my mind have lost the plot. We have a family bathroom with a separate bath and shower and a downstairs loo. I’m conscious that all new builds have an en suite these days and would quite like one but the layout of our house means the cost would be prohibitive. And I like my spacious bedroom!

I had a foot operation in February and was unable to go/sleep upstairs for nearly four months, so the downstairs cloakroom was a godsend.

We have moved, just this week into a beautiful house that has 3 loos ( one in bathroom, separate one on landing and one downstairs )
A surfeit of facilities, given there's only hubby and myself but I know it will be welcomed when the family descends!

If I had a house with one toilet only I'd like a nice plastic shed with a chemical toilet there (bucket and chucket) for emergencies.

A five bedroom, detached house. Downstairs cloakroom, upstairs: large guest bathroom, family bathroom containing bath with shower over and basin, separate loo, en-suite to master bathroom. I am very lucky to have en-suite to myself and DH uses family bathroom!

We have a house with two staircases, each leading to two bedrooms and a bathroom, plus a downstairs cloakroom.

We have one bathroom with separate toilet. Both upstairs.
Until I was thirteen I lived in a two bedroomed house with an outside toilet and a bath under the kitchen bench. Not surprisingly we only had a bath once a week as my mother had to move everything off the bench to fold it back. There were seven of us living in that house but we managed.
Then we moved to a three bedroomed house with a bathroom and toilet upstairs.I thought all my birthdays had come at once.As a body conscious teenager I could wallow in the bath for ages nearly everyday.

3 bedrooms, a downstairs loo, main bathroom and an en-suite. Bearing in mind Michael Caine's comment that "the secret of a happy marriage is separate bathrooms" DH uses the main bathroom, which has an over-bath shower, and I have the en-suite. DH spends ages in his bathroom, he even has a rack for his magazines, newspapers and various puzzle books. If we only had the one I'd never get a look-in ....

I moved from a 4 loo house to a 1 loo in the upstairs bathroom. I was determined to resolve the problem and finally got someone to agree that there was room in my understairs cupboard. It is teeny weeny with the sink forming part of the cistern and it had to be a macerater but I am soooo pleased with it! It was the best grand I’ve spent here!

5 bedrooms, 2 loos - not enough, but the only option space-wise is an en-suite as the master bedroom is huge.
I hate en-suites, it’s enough hearing him snore, let alone suffering a riot on the senses of him going to loo, a couple of metres from my bed! No!
I’m already getting annoyed at him for leaving the door of the en-suite open - and we haven’t even got one!
