I wonder how many of these opinions would be different if it was Jeremy Corbyn? It seems to me that the Tories can do absolutely anything and people will defend them.

I wouldn't defend anyone no matter who it was if they were in the throes of a drunken argument.

I don't particularly care who or what a politician is currently f......g. I do care that they are honest, have principles and some understanding of real life. Johnson has none of those qualities. I do think that if Parliament was composed of a wider variety of people with different private lives we might get better government. As it is it remains a haven for white married men whose lives are much as they were in the 19th century, whilst outside the Westminster bubble things have moved on. (I suppose the men have moved on in that they used to stay married and keep mistresses, they are now serial husbands)

Having just read through this thread, I am utterly horrified by the number of people bending over backwards to defend the indefensible : a man who has lied and lied to the British people, shown himself to be racist, misogynistic and homophoic, and ruthless in the pursuit of power. As mayor of London he wasted millions of pounds of taxpayers 'money on vanity projects that were useless. As Foreign Secretary he made us a global laughing stock and because he was too lazy to read his briefs properly caused a woman wrongfully imprisoned in Iran to be locked up for even longer. Why would anyone defend such a man?
And before anyone calls me a lefty, if being a lefty means believing in telling the truth, respecting human rights, investing in education, health and all those other things that make for a civilised society, then yes, I am a proud lefty.
My only hope is that all those normalising disgraceful behaviour are Russian bots!

Anniebach poor Charles Kennedy was unfortunately an alcoholic, but otherwise he was a lovely man, an honest politician (such a rarity now), a man of principles, funny at times but very serious in his political focus, charismatic without being narcissistic and most importantly a decent human being.

Boris Johnson is none of these things.

There is an old-fashioned question that should be asked when considering any person seeking high office "would you buy a used car from this man/woman"?

It is ridiculous, isn't it? As people are so mercenary these days do you think they were hoping to sell the tape to the highest bidder? Or am I being too cynical?

spabbygirl actually The Guardian article proves nothing except that Boris is as incompetent in his private life as he is in his public, and personally I would rather see a proper analysis of his failures as Mayor and minister than have his personal failures waved in front of me. Because what emerges from this is that Jeremy Hunt beng a 'proper married man" is the best option, whereas in fact both candidates are equally as useless and incompetent professionally. That's the danger of taking into account private lives, someone who is no better than another candidate somehow becames better, because he doesn't screw around. It's not the way I want to choose a government and certainly not a PM.

Yes agreed, both ghastly in their own slimy way, but one of them is going to be PM. The only hope is they will be the 3rd prime minister in 3 years, and will not last any longer than their predecessors.

I am the first to accept that any relationship can fail, but it is how any person handles that failure that to me speaks on their character.

Boris (The Buffoon) Johnson obviously thinks only of himself when it comes to personal relationships with others. He seems to have little thought for previous wives and partners when his latest "antics" attract publicity to former relationship members at it has in the press.

As stated any personal relationship can fail, but a person (especially those in the public eye) can move on to a fresh relationship quietly and with dignity while still holding respect for the privacy of former participants in their life. In that, several of Johnsons former wives and partners have attracted what must be very unwanted press attention over many days of recent.

Johnson has demonstrated he is totally incapable of the above respect, as only he matters in that warped mind of his as he moves on yet again to whoever is silly enough to be attracted to him.

I believe he has never placed any real effort into making any of his previous relationships work, and in that, I have no respect for him or any other person who lives and thinks in that vein.

His neighbour did the right thing reporting it to the police.

Just because we’ve had plenty of politicians with dubious private lives -( didn’t Gladstone go out to meet “fallen women”? ) and problems with alcohol, doesn’t mean it’s something to be lauded or ignored. With social media, they’ll find it much more difficult to hide any dirty laundry , it all will be public sooner or later. I think the public can tolerate a certain degree of imperfection in their representatives, but there has to be limits. Lying ,laziness and deception in his previous jobs would be red lines for most people who give it any thought.

So Grandad1943 do you consider Jeremy Hunt the better option because he is safely monogamous?

The neighbours knew darn well that Boris practically lived there and besides seeing him, must have read and heard about it in the media.
It follows that he recognised his voice too and that decided his course of action. Not to immediately ring police...oh no...but to stand by the adjoining wall holding his phone to capture the fracas.
If he honestly thought that a candidate for PM and a well known person before that, would physicslly attack, maim, harm, murder, assault or rape his g/f then he's madder than the proverbial bof.

Gabriella, then who did call the police? Someone did. There's nothing wrong with collecting evidence when there is a possibility a crime is being committed. The fact he may have had some ulterior motive for later publishing it doesn't make it any less useful to have gathered it - the police may have wanted it.

trisher, I do not support anyone who is part of this current Tory Party. What I whole heartedly wish to see is a General Election held that would bring this Brexit debacle to and end once and for all.

Having lived next to nightmare neighbours for a couple of years in the past I actually have some sympathy for the neighbours. We used to hear the woman screaming and shouting “get off me” and smashing things and I or the other neighbours would call the Police regularly. It used to sound as though she was being murdered.

Secondly, someone who wants to be Prime Minister needs to recognise that they should not set themselves up for media attention IMHO

I cannot believe anyone thinks this is an inconsequential story. This is in the national interest. This man wants to be the leading citizen in our country. I would have called the police and recorded the incident and probably given the tape to the newspapers if what is being reported is correct . Domestic abusers should not get anywhere near the doors of 10
Downing Street. And no I'm not a liberal lefty. If it was anyone that I thought could influence at a senior level the newspaper would apply and if it was anyone else the police would apply.

What else has this Left leaning neighbour recorded ? Boris will undoubtedly have confidential information and make phone calls not for public consumption. Should neighbour's flat be "swept" for recording equipment and his phone confiscated for investigation. I am not a Boris fan but think this has been a set up.
