Music from times past

So many musical memories here that I recognise and, like others, link to certain periods of my life. No wonder we remember these songs. They had tunes!! .... Grumpy old Woman alert ....... when the same songs are sung by today's performers they 'twiddle' about until the tune (which the original writer took the time and effort to create) is barely recognisable. I have just watched 'Britain's Got Talent' with DGC and a 12 year old boy produced a version of 'Try a Little Tenderness'. I'm not knocking his singing or talent or bravery in getting up there but I did not even recognise it until I picked up the words, let alone the appropriateness of the song for a boy of his age. Rant over but there are so many other examples!!!

My dad bought a Dansette in the 1950s. We had just two 78s then. Can't remember what they were ... 'The Blue Danube', I think, and 'Something in a Vicarage Garden' ...? (If anyone knows what this was, I'd be grateful to hear.)

The first record I ever bought was 'Oh Carol' by Neil Sedaka. And I used to sing it all the time around the house, just to annoy my brother who was going out with a girl called Carol. (He later married her.)

Elvis, Cliff, Johnny Mathis, The Polka Dots ...? Dad loved Shirley Bassey - so we had all of hers. My older sister liked Matt Monroe. Then later, it was Motown! Happy Days!

Lyndiloo, that would be In a Monastery Garden by Albert Ketelbey. My parents had it, too, though I can’t remember what it sounded like. It was ‘light music’.

They had a 78 I used to like called The Wedding of the Painted Doll. Anyone remember that?

Lincolnimp, I saw Gerry and the Pacemakers about 3 or 4 years ago in Boston, and I agree, if you close your eyes he sounds exactly as he did all those years ago. The same went for The Searchers, who have also just retired. Next month I`m going to see, for the first time, another teen idol of mine, Marty Wilde. Oh, the nostalgia!
Grandma2213, I agree entirely about the young boy on BGT, the song was unrecognisable but for the words, yet the judges all thought he was brilliant.
