Music from times past

I love Summer Place and Johnny Remember Me too. My gym 'mix' has a lot of Free, Abba, Stones and Killers. Loved the Beatles in their day, particularly Hey Jude.

Oh dear...I ask with trepidation, David Whitfield? I was such a square but his voice (and looks) did it for me. Such happy memories of my carefree youth.

I went to a very ordinary Secondary Modern school but the staff were just brilliant. In the early 60’s the school leaving age was 15 but some of us were encouraged to stay for an extended year so we could do O levels. So, it’s April 1963 and those of us in year 5 felt quite special! Before the real revision for exams started (no study leave then) we went with members of staff for a long weekend to a type of outward bound centre at Wicken Bonhunt in North Essex. After their first real hit - Love, love me do - in November 1962 we were all smitten with the Beatles and on the Sunday of that weekend away their new song, From me to you, was being released and was expected to make the charts at number 1. On Sunday we were allowed to listen to Top of the Pops before the coach journey home and Yes, the Beatles had an instant number 1 hit. A loud cheer with lots of smiles and laughter came from us all so that song always has such special memories of a very happy time at a great school. Of course there was also Buddy Holly, Billy Fury, Helen Shapiro, Bobby Vee, Cliff Richard and many more. What a privilege it was to be a teenager at this time for those of us fortunate enough to be able to appreciate such carefree times.

We have builders here at the moment. Wandered through my sitting room yesterday just as they had Spirit in the sky playing on their radio. Found myself showing them how we 'skinheads' used to do a dance to it (step forward, cross leg over, step back, side to side twice then repeat). Then found myself explaining and demonstrating, how the 'greasers' used to do their dance to it (hands on hips swaying from side to side).

Think they've recovered work seems to have speeded up since Let me out of here

No doubt about my favourites: The Beatles and Manfred Mann! I always thought both Paul McCartney and Paul Jones absolutely gorgeous!

Anything by Louis Armstrong reminds me of my dad.
Hearing The Beachboys and The Eagles reminds me of a hot midsummer day at the old Wembley stadium - headliner was Elton John (who I was disappointed in!) the other 2 bands were support acts, along with Chaka Khan.
Laughter in the Rain by Neil Sedaka makes me think of my first serious boyfriend
Honey by Bobby Goldsboro and Seasons in the Sun always reminds me of a long summer holiday and anything by David Cassidy (Happy Birthday David for today) reminds me of a trip to London when I was 15 to see him in concert ! I could go on with more ...........!!!!

'Sailor' by Pet Clark reminds me of my Dad as he was in the navy. We played it at his funeral.

I love music. Almost all. Fav band is The Stones, closely followed by Beatles, Squeeze, INXS, Crowded House and anything that is reggae, ska, blues, soul, Tamela.

Long live our music. It feeds the soul.

When I left school I took up judo, which had just arrived in this country. I quickly became quite proficient, and was asked to take a class at our local youth club.

Cliff Richards had just had his first hit with "Move It", and it was played constantly while I was teaching. Whenever I hear it now it reminds me of bodies crashing onto the mat, and the feeling of being young, fit and active.

It's very true that you "don't know what you've got, 'til it's gone!"

Framilode - I too sneaked in to see A Summer Place, with the wonderful Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue. They kissed passionately in a hut by the crashing ocean and very soon afterwards declared that she was pregnant. I was absolutely convinced, for a long time, that a kiss could produce offspring!

gosh its ages since i've heard theme from a summer place. used to listen to all those lovely tunes on a sunday afternoon. also used to love Rock Follies- great music. remember listening to radio luxemburg in bed, especially music from richard barnes, who was very dishy. its great that m&s new ad is using fleetwood macs albatross.

Whenever I hear Waterloo Sunset it reminds me of my late
teens and early twenties when I lived and worked in London. I used to love walking by the Thames.

I`m pleased not to be alone in remembering Joe Dolan.
As for David Whitfield, he was my mother`s all time favourite, and I quite liked him until he got in the news for bad behaviour in a public toilet, went right off him then.

I too love the Theme from A Summer Place. When my daughter got married in New York, there was a DJ playing music as we entered for the reception. I thought that there was a lovely selection of tunes but it was only when I heard her playing the Theme From A Summer Place, that I realised that my daughter had given her a list of all my favourite tunes. I was deeply touched! Incidentally, I would love to see the film of A Summer Place again, but it never seems to pop up on TV. I have tried to buy it online, but they only ever have the US version, which doesn't work over here. It was a lovely, romantic film and starred Sandra Dee, who was about the same age as me, so I empathised with her character. Films in those days had really lovely theme music, which still sends shivers down my spine when I hear them and it takes me back to the days of my youth!

Anyone remember " like I Do" don't know who by and "where are you now my love " .. they used to be on family favourites with " you don't know me " I was very small but somehow remember these! . . I loved walker Brothers, Manhattan Transfer ,mammas & papas , Georgie Fame , the Peddlers ,, Beachboys, Beatles, but still love Opera !?? ..... an of course George Michael

Sunday night, very late, Radio Luxembourg had the top twenty counting down from no. 20. I don't think I ever heard numbers 10 to no.1 - I was always asleep by then!

I used to ask my mum to queue outside the record shop, while I was at school, to get me the latest Beatles single on the day of its release and I hadn't even heard it yet but knew it would be good.

Also, I remember every Saturday sitting in front of the tv waiting for my favourite program to come on- 'Here they come, walking down the street....hey, hey we're the Monkees'. It always brings back memories- the first group I saw- I went to Wembley, aged 14/15 by myself. I booked the ticket through the Fabulous magazine and it cost £1, including coach from Birmingham. Once I'd been cheeky and was banned from watching an episode by my dad and I just sat in front of the blank screen for the length of the program, sullen faced, to make a point!!!!

We had 2 LP's. One of them was Pete Seeger, one Julie Felix.

The same 2 over and over again.

Lots of 60's and 70's music on TV at the moment - Easy Listening at the BBC - BBC4. Lots of memories too.

And does any one remember The age of Aquarius by 5th dimension ...the local youth club had it as one its favourite records happy days

tollgate1 The Age of Aquarius with 5th Dimension has just been on the TV prog I mentioned above. They've moved on to more recent years now.

Lulu, To Sir With Love. Helen Shapiro, Walking Back To Happiness. The best time of all seeing The Temptations at The Talk Of The Town in London. I have just bought Elvis, Cilla Black, The Beach Boys all playing with the London philamonic Orchestra sounds really good as I am driveing along in my car.

Where Are You Now My Love, by Jackie Trent, was the theme music for a weekly thriller serial on TV, but I can`t remember what it was called. It was a lovely, haunting record.
