I travel a lot on buses and generally enjoy eavesdropping. Can't avoid it really especially with people shouting into their phones. However, last Friday on my way to yoga I overheard the following:
Small girl 1: " If you have a baby and you're not married you get sent to jail."
Small girl 2: " But Miss X (teacher?) has a baby and she's not married."
Small girl 1: " They don't know about her ...yet."
Chilling. So young! Wonder who's giving them that message?
They looked to be about 8/9 .

I have to say that even very young children seem to have more knowledge than we had as teenagers. My sex education consisted of my mother shouting at me "don't get up to mischief" as I left the house to meet friends.

This was overheard many years ago when my Auntie was telling Mum as they both stood outside the privvy where I was sitting in state.

Auntie was a country herbalist and local people would consult her, including for abortifacients.

A married woman with 8 children came to her and Auntie, as always, began with a lecture about forms of contraception.

Auntie: 'She looked at me and I've never seen a face so shocked, she said, "does yer mean that what I does wiv me old man causes babies?"
This woman, well into her 30's had no idea that sex caused pregnancy.

Auntie said, 'She marched out of my cottage with a determined look on her face saying, "Well then, now I know what to do abaht it, there'll be no more young 'uns."
And there never were'.
