Confessions of an Ikea virgin!

Hello all, and good wishes.

I have been kitting out the new office with furniture from Ikea, a 6ft long desk top, and 2 cabinets to support it (all very reasonably priced).

As the desk top wouldn't fit in either car, I had it delivered, along with the cabinets. I surpised myself by putting them together single handed, well, apart from the bit where you have to adjust the hinges to make sure the door hangs straight blush.

I will confess to having to say "Lefty Loosey, righty tighty" to myself when tightening screws wink

We decided that there were a couple of other bits that we needed, and as the delivery charges are quite high, I persuaded Mr P that a Sunday outing to Ikea would be in order.

Now, knowing how much Mr P dislikes meandering around large shops, I looked on the website to check stock availability (10/10 for being organised!) and discovered that you can also get information on where to find the items in the store.

I made a note of the locations, for example aisle 21, bay 3 on my shopping list (gold star and a big red tick!) and off we went, with me telling Mr P how we could go straight to the right location and save a lot of faffing about.

Only, it doesn't work like that, does it?

No it doesn't as those of you who are either:

A) Shaking your heads in disbelief at my naivety

B) Quietly smirking

C) Falling off your chairs laughing
will know!

You have to go into the display areas, and you are supposed to follow the arrows in a one-way direction. I will admit to making a completely unauthorised 3 point turn in kitchenwares to get back to the lift, nonconformist that I am! grin

Mr P is quite a placid chap, but I could see that he was getting a bit fed up, I tried distract him by suggesting we should have a little something in the cafe (which I'm told is good, and the prices seemed very reasonable), however he had reached that stage where only beer will do, and was not going to be swayed by an offer of meatballs, so we made our way in an orderly fashion to the correct locations, gathered the items, paid and left.

Guess who had to put together the Billy bookcase once we got home?

He did offer me the use of his drill, but I don't feel quite ready for power tools just yet!

Having an IKEA store less than 15 minutes from home, I used to use it a lot. When I looked after my (then) young g.child, there was noting better on a wet, cold day that a trip to Ikea. I would slowly wander through and there were loads of things for her to play with. Usually took short cut to cafe, I would sit with a cup of coffee and she could use their microwave to warm up for her something I had brought from home, and there were always other children for her to play with. Cafe is next to Children furniture area and they have toys out in the aisles to be playing with. Although she is no mid-teens she still enjoys time out at that store. A few years ago she used to pretend that she was welcoming people into a new home and having knocked at an imaginary door, I would be taken around the rooms, as they are set up.
There really is no need to follow the arrows on the floor. Many short cuts, and it is perfectly possible and comparatively quick and easy to go direct to the area where the flat pack furniture is stored.

Here in Hamburg we have 3 stores, one of which is in the pedestrianised shopping street 5 minutes walk from our apartment. A few doors down from TK Maxx. I consider myself most virtuous if I manage to go to either (or both) and come out with only what I went in for....grin my OH used to say I couldn't leave Ikea without food storage containers and picture frames. He may have had a point actually.hmm

I had a 75th birthday recently and instead of going somewhere la -di -da for afternoon tea I asked my grand daughter to take me to IKEA instead. She's never been and we live a two hour drive to the nearest one .She said " ok nan I'll buy you a plate of meatballs for you birthday" cheapest present I've ever had.
On the way home she said "When I get my own house you 'll have to come down here with me" Ha HA I wonder why? probably the bank of nan.
