Just asking.

That's harsh. She's entitled to her opinion.
Who would ever have thought that we'd all be talking about the EU constantly? We never know what's round the corner.
People were poor and struggling before we joined the EU. I daresay that there will also be problems irrespective of outcome. Feeling nihilistic. Life's just hard. sad

varian Fri 05-Apr-19 14:22:40

To say "My husband and I are retired, leaving the EU will not affect us" is not only the height of "I'm all right jackery" but it is ill-informed complacency.

I hope for her sake that brexit does not happen as we surely all must know by now that it will affect every one of us. Even those cushioned by wealth could find their lives disrupted in unimaginable ways. Be careful not to develop a serious illness needing unobtainable medication.

Brexit has indeed brought out the worst in some people, but it has not ruined Gransnet. If our brexit debates help to inform GNetters and allow us to reflect on how different the reality is to the hollow promises, that is a good thing.

That being said, catastrophising may be premature!!

maryeliza54 Fri 05-Apr-19 14:29:54

Jane I think perhaps you’ve missed out what my comment is about. Maddy posted wrong information about whether professionals were able to work with a criminal conviction. She was wrong - if something is a fact, then it’s a fact - you can’t have an opinion on that. She’s refused to admit she’s wrong so what else is she wrong about?

annep1 Fri 05-Apr-19 14:36:55

Some people have been rude when giving opinions especially regarding N Ireland.. I wouldn't associate with rude people in real life.

lemongrove Fri 05-Apr-19 15:38:00

Varian you state ( with a straight face?) that ‘Brexit has indeed brought out the worst in some people’.......really?
You think? ?
It’s certainly brought out the worst in many Remainers.

Day6 Fri 05-Apr-19 16:00:44

Doom, doom and still more doom.
Surely, given you don't know what tomorrow will bring, never mind next year, this constant Remainer scaremongering and worse case scenario outlook must be affecting you varian?

I remember life before the Common Market/EU. We were poor, very poor. In no way, shape or form did being in the EU change my circumstances.

We happen to live in a country big on human rights, enlightened, and with a welfare state. The UK is a good place to live and just because Brussels can no longer interfere or demand billions from the UK does not mean all that we are and all we have goes down the drain!

We will adjust - but you seem determined to deny that (why???) and imagine only horror once we (if we) wave bye-bye.

Life goes on, as the many cheery and upbeat threads on Gransnet indicates. I'd say most of those posters on political threads who are bracing themselves for nothing short of a post-Brexit armageddon, tend not to post much elsewhere.

jura2 Fri 05-Apr-19 16:02:35

Lemon, I am sorry but I can't let that go unchallenged.
1 million +++ marched the streets of London, and previously about 500.000 - and NOT ONE single unpleasant incident. Just good humour, solidarity, people of all ages and backgrounds, families, some 3 generations - NOT ONE single issue.

And then look at the small marches of leavers and the vile bile, violence and hatred that poured- against the police too. Of course, they are not representative of all leavers- but they are definitely a strong wing. And Will Self's comments to the awful Mark François were spot on.

crystaltipps Fri 05-Apr-19 16:13:13

Those accusing anyone daring to criticise the sacred icon of Brexit are labelled as doom and gloom mongers who have no idea of the future glories ahead. Well those supporters have no idea either, but they are prepared to drag millions of their unwilling fellow citizens into the unknown, causing political chaos and costing millions which could have been spent on our creaking public services. If that isn’t pointed out it will be assumed we are all of the same mindset. When we are blatantly divided.

Day6 Fri 05-Apr-19 16:17:44

I'd say 99.9% of those ordinary, everyday people (from all walks of life, ages, professions) who want to Leave share the dislike of thuggery and violence, in any form, for any reason.

Rest assured, 17 million decent people pour scorn on violence too. I have been a football fan for a long, long time. Back in the '70s, boot boys, nasty skinheads looking for a fight, rampaged around towns - having 'fun'. Thousands upon thousands of fans deplored their behaviour. Thousands and thousands went to matches for love of the game, camaraderie, banter and friendships formed from attending games over a long period of time.

The boot boy element of Brexit exists on both sides. The scorn poured on people who voted differently from Remainers has been absolutely appalling. The names Leavers have been called, the comments from remainers about Leavers in opinion sections of the press, the picture Remainers like to paint of Leavers being violent scum has been well documented,

Let's not pretend Remainers wear halos.

If the pen is mightier than the sword, Remainers have been using theirs to write the vilest hate mail, for the last three years, incessantly.

Shame on you.

Ginny42 Fri 05-Apr-19 16:41:49

Day6 please tell me how you know beyond doubt that 'the vilest hate mail' sent incessantly for the last three years, was from Remainers?

Show me the evidence and I will believe you.

jura2 Fri 05-Apr-19 17:03:44

Sorry Day6, that can't remain unchallenged either. The tabloid press, and so many twitter groups, FB groups, and other social media, some open, some closed- have been posting the vilest threats, death threats, and the most absolutely violent and disgusting stuff re remainers and politicians who are trying to save the country from a disastrous No Deal. Leave marches have demonstrated the vilest, most violent people, shouting, abuse, and worse.

They do not represent the majority of leavers- but their violence, abuse and threats cannot be ignored- or compared - at all. Please provide links- and we will provide our own re the above- there is tons out there to see and witness.

crystaltipps Fri 05-Apr-19 19:40:20

Sorry Day6 most of the death threats, hate mail, abuse come from the pro Brexit faction. Why has Gina Millar/ judges/ Anna Soubry etc had to have police or private protection? Who killed Jo Cox? Sorry, but the far right contain the thuggish element you wish to deny. Give us the evidence for your assertions.

lemongrove Fri 05-Apr-19 20:06:14

My post was pertaining to GN.

Callistemon Fri 05-Apr-19 20:16:54

I think you are not understanding the particular grammar of the vilest hate mail.

It is not a comparison, it is, I think, an expression of how extreme it is.
That from other factions may be 'the vilest' type of hate mail too.

Ginny42 Fri 05-Apr-19 21:09:55

However, Callistemon, Day6 clearly states that Remainers have spent three years sending messages of hate.

That is an inflammatory statement and one which cannot be substantiated. If she cannot prove it, she should withdraw the accusation.

jura2 Fri 05-Apr-19 21:54:09

Day6 'you are talking about GN adn say 'Remainers have been using theirs to write the vilest hate mail, for the last three years, incessantly.' - have you received some by pm? Because there has been none of that description on GN- has there? You really need to give examples of this- or withdraw, really.

Many of us can find pages and pages of the vilest hate mail on Twitter, FB, other sites and some section of the Press- and videos too. But none from GN and none from remainers.

MaizieD Sat 06-Apr-19 09:57:52

Gnet Remainers are waiting with interest,Day6

Quizqueen You said

Before the referendum was even dreamt up by Mr Cameron, I wonder how many people posted on a daily basis on gransnet (or mumsnet or in the media, in general), all about how they loved the EU, how they loved paying £50 million a day etc, into their coffers because it was worth it to have your country told what to do all the time by another organisation!!

Very few I would imagine as I doubt many saw it the way you describe. I don't think anyone believes that our country has been told what to do all the time by another organisation, please explain what you mean by that? Perhaps your misunderstanding of the way the EU works is the reason you voted leave?

suzied Sat 06-Apr-19 11:14:59

quizqueenBefore the referendum very few posted on daily basis about how the EU was making their lives awful to be fair..

maddyone Sat 06-Apr-19 13:26:04

Perhaps I ought to remind everyone that I voted remain.

jura2 Sat 06-Apr-19 14:13:29

Still patiently and politely waiting Day6.

If you'd rather not respond, then perhaps you could ask for that post to be removed- Thanks.

breeze Sat 06-Apr-19 14:31:38

Oh stop it jura2 she's probably got a life and doing something at the weekend. Or can't be bothered to trawl through for examples and cut and paste them because you demand it of her.

And if she doesn't want to offer proof, so what.

Who put you in charge. She gave her opinion. Since when do you have to withdraw posts because you don't want to provide solid evidence.

And what if people do make a mistake. Does that mean they are wrong in everything they do.

Don't jump on people and criticise unless you are PERFECT and never make any mistakes, ever.

No. I don't think Brexit has ruined GN Teetime you little tinker grin

I said my bit in the beginning and refuse to go back over and over again.

When it happens, the sky won't fall in.

vigdis Sat 06-Apr-19 14:32:03

Day6

I have seen insulting, condescending, patronising and arrogant remarks all over the 'net from Remainers commenting on Leavers.

But hate mail? Threats? I think you need to back that up because it can be a criminal offence to post such stuff.

12Michael Sat 06-Apr-19 14:39:25

I think the ones in charge of it ,need to listen to us.
