Changing clocks ⏰

British Summer Time starts on tomorrow as the EU moves towards ending mandatory clock changes.

Daylight Saving Time has been mandatory in the EU since 2001, but the European commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker, has been championing a change, saying: “Clock-changing must stop. Member states should themselves decide whether their citizens live in summer or winter time.”

Countries are expected to choose to either remain permanently on summer or winter time, although Portugal and Greece are among those which have previously indicated they would rather retain the present system.

Soon we may have to choose which time suits us. Do you have a preference?

I hate the ‘spring forward’ but it’s so nice to wake up at 6am(5am) in October and then have a lie in for an hour till it is really 6am.

I quite like the clock change that heralds the summer. In the Autumn when the nights are drawing in you are rewarded with an extra hour in bed. That's how I remember which is which. Also - "Spring forward and Fall back".

I love this change to British Summer Time. For many years now, I have found that I am naturally waking up earlier and earlier in the weeks leading up to it anyway, so this hour forwards is in perfect harmony with my body clock.

I am sure that I would cope equally well with, and enjoy, Double Summertime if we had it.

However I always dread going back onto GMT in autumn, as the dark evenings really depress me, and always have done. I am definitely a spring/summer person.

It seems we are all different!

Always forget to do the time on the washing machine and the car. Dogs still expected breakfast within an hour of me being downstairs. I’d be glad not to change the clocks, BST will do me, what are you supposed to do with the extra daylight in the morning, weeding, cut the grass, etc. I don’t think so. Evening in the garden drinking wine - oh yes.

The car clock is the one I usually forget! ?

Oh heck, I keep saying to myself " it's only that time " too. It's put me right out this afternoon as I really feel that I've lost an hour. I don't remember it being 1 o'clock at all !

DH changed all the clocks this morning; some updated themselves.

However, my body clock is still out of sync.

I love the clocks changing. It means I get to look forward every year to the start of BST - without a doubt the best day of the year! So, of course, there is the opposite end of the spectrum where I dread the clocks going back in October, but it's worth it for the joy of that extra hour of daylight at the end of March grin.

If we had to choose either permanent winter or summer time, I'd selfishly go for summer time. Being retired means I don't care if it's darker in the mornings, but having the light in the evenings is everything to me.

Me too Bathsheba

I dread summer, hot days and often hot nights, daylight waking me up too early. I’d be happy with equal days and nights all year round.

My spirits rise when the darker evenings return in Autumn. We are not all alike.

That's the one I always forget too; also forgetting how to change it and so requiring a search through the manual, having forgotten to write the page number on its cover. sad
It's only 6 months between changes so should be easy enough remembering how to do it!

Btw. Pinch, punch etc and don't be a fool today! grin

Our clocks in New Zealand haven't gone back yet as we approach autumn, but will soon. Right now we are 12 hours ahead of you and soon will be only 11 hours ahead. That makes it a bit easier when I have to telephone someone in the UK and am already yawning my head off. It also means that there is a bit of an overlap with late-night and early rising Gransnetters.

Nana3 Mon 01-Apr-19 07:23:08

Oh the car clock, by the time I've worked out how to do it it's time to change it again, ridiculous.

NfkDumpling Mon 01-Apr-19 07:44:01

BST please. My body clock has decided. It much prefers summer, although living in the east I rather think it should be the other way around. Northern Ireland gets light a long time after us - perhaps we should have a time zone line somewhere along the Welsh border.

I feel that darker mornings should be safer than darker evenings when everyone is tired and less alert.

Ginny42 Mon 01-Apr-19 07:46:59

I always thought it was to allow for more hours of daylight in the far north of the UK. So from yesterday it was lighter in the evenings, but in winter it comes light an hour earlier in the mornings.

Without the change it would be dark for so much longer on winter mornings and I think I read somewhere that accident rates were higher on dark mornings when people were going to school/work.

I like the lighter evenings as summer feels that much closer.

Just as I was feeling pleased I had done all the clocks, I realised last night that I had forgotten the timer switches - I have several around the house. The manual ones are easy enough but I have 3 electronic ones and I can't find the instruction leaflet to work out how to change them!!!!!
