But they won't stop the game as there is too much money at stake. It would also cause unrest and crowd control problems. The perpetrators should have a lifetime ban.

But how far does the 'racist' definition extend?

The kind of monkey-chanting that I presume prompted this post is quite clearly racist. No argument.
But if there was to be a law, where would the parameters of racism be drawn? Take in this context, I don't think RosieLeah's question is unreasonable. Would calls of 'white moron' fall within the legal definition. Or calls referring to nationality rather than race, where the distinction can be more blurred depending on the specific nationality on question?

These are just some of the questions that would have to be answered, I presume, if there was to be a law.

However, with or without a law, I agree 100% that matches should be stopped immediately in cases of clearly-racist behaviour such as monkey chanting.

Rosie Leah's question is perfectly reasonable, and it betokens a pretty poor state of affairs when a person cannot ask it without receiving childish abuse (Blue Belle) in response.
A definitive answer is hard to find; I tried.

I believe some clubs do give a lifetime ban for racist offences. What is needed, of course, is re-education. I don’t believe anybody is inherently racist, I think it stems from a variety of causes, including ignorance p and a lack of empathy.

My DH is a season ticket holder at the team he supports. He hates all this racism but I think he would be furious if the players walked off when he has paid for his ticket and gone to the trouble of getting there. I think most supporters would feel the same.

I think you are right BB, the only way to stop this is peer group pressure. If the fans turn on the perpetrators because they are angy at losing the game they have paid for, it would stop. But that would only work if the monkey chanters were only a small proportion of the crowd. I haven't been to a football match for many years, how widespread is it?

....but, of course, the perpertrators would be slain on the spot by the rest of the football crowd.

I have some sympathy for Rosie's viewpoint as I have been racially abused twice because I am white. On neither occasion had I done anything to cause the abuse just in the wrong place at the time. One of the times it could have caused a very serious accident.

I hate racial abuse but don't see why I should have to put up with it because I am not a minority. We are a family with two different racial minorities but why do I feel the need to justify the above?

Bottom line, someone has to sacrifice something for the situation to change, ticket holders, players, owners, perhaps all three - Ticket holders who attend the game support the racism- Players who don't walk off the field support the racism- Owners who allow it support the racism-

And sponsors ...

Perhaps someone could give a link as to the last time white players were abused at a football match by black people from the crowd. Whilst they are searching for this link they could look up the Kick it Out campaign and see the many and varied examples of racism in football that happen. RL’s post used a classic and well known technique that people who think that the subject under discussion is a bit of a joke use to distract from a serious discussion. If she wants a discussion about racism, she could start her own thread. As for the OP, GS has mused as to whether he should have taken his players off. Certainly UEFA should stop issuing fines and instead punish in other ways that did far more than hit the very deep pockets of the nations teams. Me I’d vote for stopping the game and awarding the match to the team whose players were being abused

Having married out of my race I lived through a lot of abuse by association in the 60s and 70 s I have NEVER ever been abused for being white In no way am I doubting posters who have experienced this but I m just saying it’s never happened to me or mine
I just feel that it needs something drastic to be done to stop it and yes the supporters would be furious but hopefully they would be furious at the right people if no one is brave enough to stand up to it it will never end and now more than ever it needs to stop we live in the worst racial tension I have known since the old days

I was listening to Radio4 earlier today.
Apparently there is a mechanism for reacting when this sort of abuse happens.
The referee could have stopped the game, he chose not to. The manager can request that the game can be stopped, Mr. Southgate didn’t.
I think that this would be very hard for those fans that have spent their hard earned money and put in effort to get to the match. BUT, it has to be stopped.
If it isn’t it can only get worse.
I think that there can be a ban on the ground that the match is being played in. Not sure about that though- I was driving!
