What is your favourite free app? ??

Mine is called Stocard.
It allows you to take and store photos of all your storecards, meaning that I don't have to carry a whole wallet-full of cards around with me. In stores you just open the app and show the appropriate card. Most till scanners can just scan them, but occasionally the till assistant has to type in the card number.
It also tells you of special offers etc. when you are in a shop.

I love Night Clock....a portable alarm clock for any bedside.

I have an app with real- time bus timetables- saves having to wait at the bus stop for more than a few minutes, or alternatively tells me if I have enough time to walk to the next stop or two. It’s NXWM, for the a west Midlands, I expect other areas have a similar app.

Mine is Mr Number that blocks any call not on my contact lists and instead invites them to leave a message. Most don’t which shows what kind of calls they are.

TVCatchup this gives all TV stations so all you need is to touch the one you want to watch. There is no need for all the individual apps . Though it is called Catchup it is only live programmes.

Waze which shows any traffic hold ups on your route. Allowing you to find an alternative.

Tripit, which shows all details of any travel you have arranged, date, time, ticket number, seat number, flight/ferry number, hotel name and address, phone number of company etc.

It means when you're travelling you have all and any details at your fingertips when you get to the ferry terminal, hotel desk, flight check in. Even if you don't travel often, it's very useful and saves having to scrabble for paperwork, tickets, emails.

My local bus company app that saves longs waits in the wind and rain and lets me know when I am getting to my stop (especially helpful when I don't know where I'm going).

Also Stepsapp which counts my 10,000 steps a day.

Some interesting apps on here. My favourite is Life360, I am linked to my children and grandchildren on it. We can all see where everyone (or their phone) is at any one time. My son travels around the world with his job and it’s so interesting to see where he is, also when he’s back in UK so I know it’s ok to phone him. It’s also useful to see when anyone is home so we can drop in. My daughter has to drive around the south of England to events and it nice to see when she is safely home.

Some people would find the app intrusive, but we feel it’s friendly and caring.

I think so too Fflaurie which is why I started this thread. It’s really interesting!

Am I right in assuming these apps are on smart phones? My phone is what you might call a 'dumb phone' so doesn't do these things - I don't think.
I've still got my late husband's old phone and I like to play a game on it - Snake - pathetic, aren't I?

WhatsApp as we send pictures for free even if abroad it uses wifi

Not necessarily lbc I haven’t got a smartphone (don’t want one) just a ‘retro’ Nokia. My apps are here on my iPad.

My two favourite Apps, ones that I use a lot, are WhatsApp which allows me to make calls and send messages and photos via wifi instead of my service providers' call allowance, and The Train Line which is extremely useful for looking up train times, buying tickets on line, seeing where I am on a train journey, which platform I need to aim for to get the train . It even allows travellers to update whilst on the go, telling others if there are any seats free in the carriages.

Love this thread-I’m off to look at some of these apps. I like BBC Weather, Night Sky -useful for walks at night especially abroad and Evermusic, where I can save music to hear offline without using iTunes. I’ll be interested to see if I suddenly get adverts about free apps after having posted on Gransnet.

I love the MySupermarket app. It lets you compare your shop at the big supermarkets. You can also put alerts in to let you know when there is a price drop. I use that function for tassimo pods, dishwasher tablets and laundry liquid. Means I can shop when it’s at the best price.

I've decided I'm in the dark ages. Only have an old Nokia phone which I use in an emergency. Haven't mastered texting yet. Can't use an i pad, have to have a mouse. Can't get to grips with my new kindle as you have to swipe it.

I’ve just remembered another favourite not yet mentioned - Spotify. For free music, it’s brilliant! Just go into search for a song by name of artist or song title and you’ve got it! Plus for instance I was in a gin bar (I know) recently and was loving listening to the soft jazz music playing quietly in the background. I mentioned it to a staff member and he said ‘do you have Spotify?’ When I said I did he told me I could go into the app, put in the name of the bar and click on the choice to add their music. Wow! And it was SO easy to do.
