What is your favourite free app? ??

I love my weather app XCweather. It is amazingly accurate!

I like WhatsApp too. I have just added the Boots app. They gave me 200 advantage points for doing so. They also give you offers. We both have the Wetherspoons app If the place is busy you can order and pay from your seat and the staff bring your order to your table.

Don't wish to derail but would love a smartphone. Can anyone tell me the cheapest as imalways appalled at the cost when I go into Apple. I have an iPad with quite a number of apps mentioned.

Jessity She had to change the number as she was getting some upsetting calls, she tried blocking the numbers but somehow was still getting through so number was changed at police suggestion. Luckily she was at the end of the contract and changed providers because the one she was with were so unhelpful

madmum how awful to lose pictures etc. Is there some reason why your daughter changed her phone number? I’ve changed networks lots of times over the years and just “port” my number

BBC radio iPlayer (now Sounds) Can download a play or The Archers to listen to on the bus or when walking to town.

Good reads is a good one, keep track of what you have read and see what others are reading, if you see one you like then save it to your to read list.

Little word of warning about WhatsApp, my daughter changed network and her number, rather than deleting herself from the family group chat she just added her new number, we have now found out that number has been reissued and we found a stranger on our chat who was able to read everything, can’t delete them as they have become admin on it,contacted WhatsApp with no reply so had to delete the chat but it had lots of pictures on and videos which some are now lost

Lots of good ones here. One of my favourites it Google Translate. You can hold the phone over a foreign language and it translates it before your very eyes!!

Local bus app. Saves me standing in the cold waiting for a bus that's not going to turn up or going to be extremely late.

Reading List where you store the books you’re reading and have finished, useful to check how far you’ve got in a series. I think you have to pay a small amount once you’ve listed about 50 books.

RB digital, the library app mentioned by others also has a decent selection of magazines. I’ve not renewed my subscription to one as I can read it free of charge.

RainToday shows rainfall radar for the last hour and the next so I can see whether the drop of rain I just felt is going to be just that or a drenching. I often consult it before going shopping or taking the dog for a hike.

Thank you for the app suggestions. Here is another one, Birthdays app. You put your family and friends birthdays in this app and it lists them in month order, I find it very handy.

Google maps is top of my list. Brilliant for route planning by car, public transport walking or cycling. Better than the Garmin I bought for the car. Gives very clear directions and a photo of your end point. Always gives gives 3 options. Choose arrival or departure times.
Next is WhatsApp. Great for free international calls, sending photos, group chats.
Also Mapmywalk. Trainline, Wordscapes and block puzzle which can get addictive. I just love technology.

Readly is a brilliant app if you enjoy reading magazines. There’s something for all. It does cost £7.99 a month but you can have four people on the same account. All the popular women’s magazines are on there, as well as craft, men’s interest, photography, food magazines, current affairs, computer and many, many more.

How about Too Good To Go, where you can buy from restaurants near where you live their dishes that they would have to pay to go to land fill, it is part of War on Waste. Yo Sushi, Paul etc are signed up and you get real scrumptious deals.

Thanks for starting this. Very useful apps. I've jst installed Pocket. Wish I could install whatsapp but I don't have a smart phone and it doesn't seem to work just on my ipad.

PS love WhatsApp too. Can use Messenger to make free phone calls to a friend in US.

Nope, no charge for Mr Number and I’ve been using it for over a year. I started getting calls from the Philippines, Nigeria, Seychelles, etc usually in the early hours. Fortunately I had settings which only allow special numbers eg close family, to ring me between 11.00pm-7.00am so I found these missed calls.

When I googled them they were red-flagged numbers. Installed Mr Number and it now filters out anyone not on my contact list.

I love App Rome2rio It will give you directions to anywhere in the world from anywhere in the world Including flights trains buses Uber etc., Costs & timetables. So next time you want to get to Timbuktu just type it in !

Signal, same functionality as Whatsapp, but more secure, as family insist on that.
Also use Whatsapp for girly chats.
Waze if not in my car, which has inbuilt satnav.
I like the Flashlight (torch) for finding keyholes in the dark.
DuckDuckGo for searching without being tracked.
BA, Easyjet, etc for flight tickets.
Classic FM for music
Currency Plus for instant conversions when shopping abroad.
I have downloaded the NHS app, but am in despair for any progress in my surgery to enable me to use it!
