Anyone giving something up or doing something extra for Lent ?

janeainsworth Wed 06-Mar-19 17:45:38

Dear Merlot I’ve only just seen this thread. I’m so very sorry. I know you’ll be a tower of strength for your DD and her sons, even if your own heart is breaking. xx

melot I am so sorry for your family. You must be so worried about your grandsons. Hope you will all have the strength to keep going.

annie I am doing something different this year. In the past I have given up wine, chocolate etc. This year I have ordered the two CofE booklets on the beatitudes and the Lord’s Prayer and my intention is to read these and to think about their content. To spend more time in thought I suppose. (Won’t help the weight loss but there you go ?)

Merlot I've just read this thread.
No wonder you're angry. Thoughts and prayers for your dear daughter.
I know how much I love mine.

Anniebach Wed 06-Mar-19 20:07:52

Doodle I am meditating on ‘The Beatitudes’ too and ‘The Book of James’ .

On such a restricted diet there is nothing edible I can give up !

Penances can be a joy because they are cleansing and purifying of the soul.
Doodle like you I will be reading and thinking by using the daily meditations in '40 Days and 40 Ways', by Dom Henry WansbroughOSB

don't normally 'do' Lent but this year I'm being positive and committing to giving the dogs a 30 minute lead walk every day, they already have an hours off lead but can always do with an extra training walk.
DD is committing to going to bed at a sensible time depending on her shifts and DH is giving up social media. Not sure about DS, he normally gives up cakes and sweets.

Merlotgran, I am so very sorry, you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers ?

Annie, your question reminds me of my recently departed mil. Both my mil and Fil were churchgoers and always gave up chocolate for Lent. Our dil said that on a visit to them a few years ago she saw my mil having a cuppa and a kit kat, so she asked if she'd ended her fast. Certainly not she replied ' that's food' ?

Thinking of you Merlot. Prayers for courage and hope for you and your DD. Has she got a OH? xx

kittylester Fri 08-Mar-19 07:49:22

merlot, I ignored this thread as I don't 'do' religion.

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. Nothing any of us say can make things any better but do remember that you are in our thoughts and you have love and strength winging their way to you.

Please use gn as support if you need it.

B9exchange Fri 08-Mar-19 08:51:38

Merlot I can't begin to imagine what you are going through, but you are being so brave, and I pray that you will dig up the strength to support DD and DH. Please take care of yourself too, and take advantage of everything your local hospice offers. Their help can truly make a difference.

My own problems fade into nothing compared to yours, but I can send you a virtual hug!

Luckygirl Fri 08-Mar-19 08:58:07

merlot You have a right to be angry. I am so very sorry to hear about your DD - a dreadful thing to happen. My heart goes out to you. It must be so hard to begin to imagine how to cope with this. It is so cruel and I wish I could find the words to help you.

flowers Take care - I will be holding you and your family in my thoughts.

Oh merlotgran the rage I felt when my own AC died, it was so powerful and incandescent I feared it would wipe out continents. Never experienced anything like it. I feel so deeply for you from one mother to another flowers

Thank you again, everyone for your kind and thoughtful messages. Some of her treatment is painful and today she was very down. I'm hoping her sister's visit tomorrow will lift her spirits.

I'm not angry tonight. Just sad.

Oh Merlot, I'm so, so sorry to hear your dreadful news.
I know nothing I say will make you feel any better, but I'm 'holding your hand'.
Drop in on us any time you need to, you have many friends here, so, please use us whenever you need strength, or just to rant and scream about the bloody unfairness of your DD’s situation.
Sending much love to you and yours. X

lemongrove Fri 08-Mar-19 21:48:53

It shows strength of character to give things up.....But does nothing for anyone else, so yes, I think it’s better to do something good, even little things for other people.
I cannot see God being pleased with us for not eating chocolate or enjoying a G&T for Lent.Other views are available grin

lemongrove Fri 08-Mar-19 21:50:00

Merlot am so sorry.?

Cherrytree59 Fri 08-Mar-19 21:52:00
