Anyone giving something up or doing something extra for Lent ?

Septimia Tue 05-Mar-19 09:23:29

In Lent I usually give up playing incidental music on the organ before and during services and just play the hymns, which is a bit of a convention anyway. My aim is to learn a new piece of music for Easter and thereafter - so far, and with a good number of years under my belt, I've failed!

Thanks for the flowers etc.

I'm struggling to post about it but in a nutshell.....DD1 has just been diagnosed with rare gall bladder cancer. It has already spread to her liver, hepatic artery and portal vein and last Thursday, the two of us sat in front of a consultant who told us there is nothing they can do. She has been in hospital since the beginning of February when they struggled to control and infection but now it's back again.

They are going to start chemo today just to try and buy her a bit more time but it will probably be an infection that takes her and not the cancer. They told her she has a year but we know in our hearts that's an optimistic prognosis.

We're all still reeling from shock. She's only 49. Somehow we have to find the strength to support her lovely sons who are 18 and 20. They're being so brave.

That's why I'm bloody angry with God. She's had crap dumped on her before and has always picked herself up, worked hard and carried on so why this??

I'm so f***ing angry angry

Sorry. I shouldn't hi-jack the thread.

I can fully understand how you feel merlot, what is happening in your family is a tragedy.

I am not going to make any kind of theological argument, just say that my sympathy is with you, your grandchildren, and most of all your daughter, flowers flowers

Bellasnanna, I would be reduced to my underwear, if I did that.

Thanks, everyone. Please don't let the thread derail. I'll probably not post quite as much but will pop in now and again for some light hearted therapy.

I never think about Lent. I had enough of that stuff in my strict Catholic childhood.

Anniebach Tue 05-Mar-19 10:28:46

merlot my love , life never has been fair, never will, and we all rage, rage, rage .

KatyK Tue 05-Mar-19 10:29:18

Merlot flowers

Charleygirl5 Tue 05-Mar-19 10:48:07

KatyK me also. I gave up the Catholic religion when I was 17 years old and that included Lent. I have never looked back. The nuns nearly finished me off and no doubr=t I was not alone.00

KatyK me also- I gave up Lent when I gave up the Catholic religion when I was 17 years old. The nuns have a lot to answer for.

Merlot that is horrendous.

Oops, I do not know what happened there.

dragonfly46 Tue 05-Mar-19 10:57:01

Merlot I just want you to know that I and I am sure many others on here are thinking about you. There are no words. I just want to send you giant hugs and flowers

Oldwoman70 Tue 05-Mar-19 11:12:49

flowers for Merlot - there is nothing anyone can say but we are all thinking of you and your family.

As for Lent, I plan to give up crisps (my big weakness), chocolate and buying wine (although I think I could be accused of cheating as I have several bottles already in the cupboard!). The money saved will be donated to a local charity.

Urmstongran Tue 05-Mar-19 11:15:23

Merlot I sent you ? just knowing you were so very angry and upset about something.

Now I know why I send ?????????????

Oldandverygrey Tue 05-Mar-19 11:22:24

I have always understood Lent to be a private matter between you and God, so I never divulge what I am giving up. (Then no one will know when I fall at the first hurdle!)

Maggiemaybe Tue 05-Mar-19 11:27:02

Merlot, I am so sorry. thanks

Oldandverygrey Tue 05-Mar-19 11:27:53

Merlot, sorry to hear your news.

Framilode Tue 05-Mar-19 11:40:45

Merlot I am so very sorry to read your post. Life can be so very unfair and this is the worst thing that can happen to anyone. How absolutely dreadful for you all. Hug.

Marmight Tue 05-Mar-19 11:56:40

Merlot. There are no words but sending you love. I'd be bloody angry too. The unfairness of it. Life certainly throws some curved balls. May you all have the strength and courage to see you through the coming months. x

nightswimmer Tue 05-Mar-19 12:18:05
