Not having a car, I walk a lot and know lots of people by sight simply through seeing them regularly. This morning, in the space of about 20 minutes I had said hello or chatted to four people in the street then I passed the time of day with a couple of Waitrose staff that I see regularly. I often chat to people on the bus, sometimes it's someone I actually know. If I'm with OH he's amazed at how many people I seem to know.

I have always chatted to people in shops, queues etc. My DH is always amazed by what I find out!

Meant to say that I have lived in the north and no w live in southwestLondon and find people chat in both places!

I was in the queue at on if those 'buffet' style eateries and started chatting with a man who was a coach driver and in with a group if foreign visitors. My 6 year old DGD eventually piped up 'do you know each other'? When told we didn't she was curious to find out why we were talking to each other. The guy just told her, if you don't speak to people you don't find friends or learn about things. He even introduced her to one of his visitors who were from China. Couldn't wait to tell her parents all about it when she got home. Talking is good.

mcem. After deliberating for quite a while whether to do so, I will answer your last message. You are quite right and the apostrophe after the s is no longer used. However, when I was in school it was drummed into us that the apostrophe after the s was used to denote possession. So, I am old fashioned and still use it.

You should all live in the country where I live, NOBODY talks to anyone, its silent on buses, bus stops, supermarket queues etc. If I do happen to comment to someone behind me in a queue, they look at me as if I have come from another planet! As for younger people, they are only interested in their I-Phones its a sad world
