Will we be tangoed?

I'm not particularly looking forward to having my hair a rusty orange colour. if the Met office is correct in it's forecast of a huge sand/dust cloud coming our way next week.
It's taken a chunk of money to get it looking (IMO) decent and I'd be rather cross if I ended up being tangoed.
Earlier today I was having this conversation with a lady in the 'collection's queue at M&S.
Her husband was strangely silent.
Why is it that men in queues, with or without their partners, don't indulge in chit-chat with others in the queue?
My AC say that only old people ??talk to strangers. ???

Someone needs to belt up...and I'm not talking about car seats.
I'm reporting you and you know who you are.

My 12 year old DGD doesn’t so much talk to strangers, she interviews them! For instance at the checkout while DD loads the shopping, DGD will ask the cashier, how are you? Do you like your job? Have you been Working here long? Did you have to do any special training for it? Etc., etc.

My DD & OH are both at ease chatting to strangers, but I am very reserved. It’s rare for me to strike up a conversation although I will respond to others if necessary.

I'm quite happy to talk to anyone when I'm out and about - much to my family's embarrassment! They often ask me ' who was that?' and roll their eyes when I say I have no idea! But as I tell them, I enjoy chatting to real people - I don't complain when their only form of communication is on their mobiles, often with people they have never met! It's not nice when you are completely blanked, but it doesn't put me off.

My DH talks to everyone! Checkout assistants, people in queue- everyone & anyone. For some reason they all seem to talk back to him too. Then he comes home & tells me all about it. TBH I'm not that interested.
We don't go shopping together anymore. I will occasionally speak to someone in a long queue & always engage with checkout person but not a long conversation for the sake of others behind me.
Having said that before Christmas the queue for stamps at local post office was out the door & I had to post a card to Greece so I did spend a long time chatting to a very nice woman - who by the time we got to front of queue had decided to come to try our WI so it was a good result.

My dear old Dad, a hugely friendly chap all his life, was absolutely bereft after my Mother died.

Fiercely independent, he wanted to stay in the house where they had spent the majority of their 60 years together.

We saw him as often as we could.. living 200 miles away.

He took to shopping every day... and sometimes, until we phoned in the evening... the strangers he met whilst he was out were the only people he had spoken to that day.

Please spare a thought for chatty old men in shop queues.

Your short, friendly conversation could easily be the highlight of their day !

Gabriella as long as I can read and understand what I'm reading I'm happy, but I couldn't resist 'correcting the corrector' !! if that makes sense wink

Annaram1 Mon 04-Mar-19 11:28:55

Sorry Gabby, what do you mean?

CrazyGrandma2 Mon 04-Mar-19 11:29:28

Gagagran that's my philosophy as well. Had some fascinating chats with total strangers over the years.

but at moment the wind is howling down the chimney, and battering the windows.
It came
It blew
It went
as swiftly as it came!!

I haven’t seen anything on the news or local news on the weather about a dust storm.

Brigidsdaughter Mon 04-Mar-19 12:39:58

I'm with Gaga. It needs a simple comment on weather/bus delay/whatever. The reaction let's you take it from there, usually chat

I'm always happy to chat to anyone anywhere when I'm out and about. I'm very conscious that for many elderly people it may be the only conversation they'll have that day. I found in London younger people (under 40) are more reluctant to talk to strangers, but in our village everyone talks to you whether you know them or not. Our GC are equally friendly and not shy of adults, so we've all done our best to ensure they are street-wise too.

I am only able to get out once a week to go to town shopping but otherwise leave a very lonely life so am pleased to chat to anyone. I find elderly people are most friendly and often see the same people each week.

knspol Mon 04-Mar-19 13:38:38

I never used to chat to people in queues etc but find that now I do it all the time - I think it might be a "mature' person habit.

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Mar-19 13:57:06

I think it was a faint bit of dust that arrived last week in the warm weather, Sheliasue.

This is a dust storm!

I think it's nice to have a chat at a bus stop, or wherever. How lovely that your young relative is so confident, 00mam00 - I was so shy at that age that I'd barely say boo to a goose. Thankfully I've become braver as I've got older.

I like to speak to people when out and about, but I got more than I bargained for when we were travelling to Canada to visit daughter a few years back. The elderly lady next to me was having trouble putting her case into the overhead locker so I helped her. This kicked off a 'conversation', or rather monologue, which lasted the entire journey! Nine and a bit hours. I swear she barely stopped for breath. It was really interesting, if somewhat repetitive, and she did say she was worried she might be losing the plot a bit. OH couldnt believe it when I got up to go to the loo and she immediately moved across to talk to him, bless her. I think I heard her entire life history from beginning to end.

I often chat to strangers. The other day a kind gentleman saw me struggling to reach something in the supermarket, and lifted it down for me. We chatted for ages, and had a great deal in common. Both widowed several years ago, similar hobbies and ages, it was becoming really interesting!

Then his daughter swooped up and carried him off!

lemongrove Mon 04-Mar-19 15:49:02

Our car was so dusty that DH took it off to the car wash on Saturday, so maybe that was it?Been and gone?

I chat, or at least make a passing comment to people when out and about, after all why not, do we need to be ‘introduced’ first? grin
DH hates anyone to speak to him ( strangers) though will respond ( as he edges away.)

lemongrove Mon 04-Mar-19 15:50:18

GreenGran78......you nearly pulled there.?

GreenGran78 Mon 04-Mar-19 16:11:37

Missed my chance, lemongrove!
