We (both ancient) live next door to a huge old house out in the countryside, It is due to be put up for sale but there are legal difficulties causing this to be delayed. The owner moved out over a year ago but left most of his possessions in the house. We hold the keys. Recently, intruders broke a window, got in and turned the place into even more of a tip than it was in the first place. The broken window was eventually boarded up . Within the past few days, there have been several more break ins and it's obvious that the place is being systematically robbed, A ladder has been brought in to access the attics, suitcases and trunks are now in the living rooms having been brought down from the (dangerously unstable) bedroom floor. We have called the police, having seen and photographed one group of these thieves leaving the property, but they weren't interested---just logged the information. Obviously we have phoned the owner who expresses concern, says he will come to inspect, but never turns up. We are very worried about it all , losing sleep and feeling very insecure. Thieves one day, probably squatters or the local hooligans to come as the word gets round. What can/should we do? I must add that although the house is only a few yards from ours, we can't see into it. To do this , we have to walk up a long drive, go along the road then down their overgrown driveway. OK, it's not our responsibility but it's really upsetting to know that these scumbags are there , just a few yards away, stealing at will.
