Critical or just plain rude?

Celebrities are in the public eye: actors, TV performers, singers, royalty etc. and , like any one they are open for
criticism of their actions, behaviour or even being bad at what they do.

To be critical of someone's appearance or a physical attribute is not OK in my book ..that is just rude. But I do sometimes see or hear people say they dislike someone because of an aspect of their physical being: funny eyes, squeaky voice, bushy eyebrows etc.

Am I too prissy to think like this?

I have a friend who cannot watch Brenda Blethyn .. she finds her acting to contrived. I don't mind her.

MissAdventure Mon 04-Feb-19 09:31:55

She looks like she'd be good to give a lovely cuddle to me. smile
I love her face.

EllanVannin Mon 04-Feb-19 09:31:56

I've never taken to Angelina Jolie at all.

Maggie Smith is my favourite person and actress.

Oh, I’m the same with Brenda Blethyn, I just can’t do with her. I thought it was just me!

MissAdventure Mon 04-Feb-19 09:35:32

I don't watch Vera, but I saw her play a frigid woman in something years ago, and she was fabulous.

I am the same about Meryl Streep, she makes my toes curl.

I wonder what it is that makes us have thes unaccountable likes/ dislikes!?

MissAdventure Mon 04-Feb-19 09:39:32

The looks?

PECS Mon 04-Feb-19 09:41:54

Not sure.. in films the role can make actors look very different .. but possibly they remind us of a person we don't like... so we associate them with that?

MissAdventure Mon 04-Feb-19 09:44:19

Its a bit like choosing baby names.
The minute some names are suggested you think of someone from school and say "Oh no, we can't have that name! They always had a runny nose!"

PECS Mon 04-Feb-19 09:48:01

I agree.. I had that prblem when naming our children. We were both teachers so not only our own classmates but all those we had taught too!

Maggiemaybe Mon 04-Feb-19 09:52:21

Not looks with Brenda and me. It’s the over acting, the exaggerated facial contortions bordering on gurning. Or at least, that’s how she used to come over to me. I haven’t tried Vera, just because she’s in it. Apparently it’s very good.

I try very hard not to openly dislike or criticise people who are in the public eye.

We have several friends who are in the public eye and the misleading articles and so called anicdotes which appear in the media are more prevalent than any true accounts.

Don't think I can criticise actors as I can never remember their names!

I think its OK to criticise experts and news readers for speaking badly. It seems to be the thing these days to speak as badly as possible. I love accents but do think that if you set yourself up to speak on radio or TV in a news programme you should enunciate properly. I suppose I'm saying if you are paid to do a job do it properly.

Don’t hold back MissAdveture! GC is a diva and a brat in my opinion and looks like a pantomime dame. There I said it and don’t feel mean as she is horrible about people and seems to think she is the superior being. She must have a nice side but she doesn’t choose to show it.

Aepgirl Mon 04-Feb-19 10:56:19

We all have our opinions. I think Olivia Coleman is a superb actress, but when I have seen her on chat shows, etc, I find her really irritating (she probably wouldn’t like me either!)

Judge not lest thou be judged.

I saw a short video clip the other day of a large, rather nervous looking fiftyish lady coming out to face the panel on whatever the show is that has Simon Cowell and Robbie Williams on the panel. (The Voice?) They were both openly sneering and laughing as she walked to the centre stage. Clearly, someone who wasn't a size eight, perma tanned and pouting could be only a joke!
That kind of behaviour makes me boil; if you are in the public eye I don't think it is unreasonable to expect that people will discuss you and your work, but there is sensible discussion, which does not need to become cruelly hurtful or involve belittling sarcasm. The lady in question sang; she had a great voice and then of course the panel were standing up, clapping hands above their heads and displaying artificial amazement . What a false bunch of hypocrites. I hope that lady took her lovely voice back to Wales and sang to people who appreciated her, and were not so shallow.

Well, I think Susan Boyle did a lot to dispel the idea that only the physically gifted can enchant people.
smile
I do think though, that going onto that show puts you in the firing line as it were.

Is Brenda's strange sort of croaky Geordie voice her real voice?

I don't like Johanna because she once said she doesn't " do food".

MissAdventure Mon 04-Feb-19 11:32:14

I had a friend who told me she doesn't eat dinners. confused

sarahellenwhitney Mon 04-Feb-19 11:52:06

PECS. Are you too prissy? Do you think you are? You /we can 'think' but voicing/ making public these thoughts has to be depending on content and not always advisable as without a doubt you will offend someone.

MissAdventure Mon 04-Feb-19 12:02:47

I can't understand getting hurt on behalf of a celebrity.
I sometimes see incredibly rude comments here to posters, and yet people get really hot under the collar should anyone say something bad about a celebrity or royal.

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Feb-19 12:17:08

Is Brenda's strange sort of croaky Geordie voice her real voice?
I don't think so, I think she's from Kent originally Lily - and very glam!

Did you see her in Little Voice? Brilliant!
I have never watched Vera, though, and wonder how someone so old is still working in the police force hmm. I know the retirement age is higher now than it used to be at 48, but I think 72 is pushing it a bit.

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Feb-19 12:17:48

Who is Joanna?
