Where on earth did this saying come from ?

I often turn the tv off when they use urban slang as I lose the thread of the plot when I can't understand what they are talking about. Some modern speech just irritates though. There is a fashion reviewer on the tv who talks about, wearing a trouser, a shoe etc, when did they stop being pairs? What is a price point, what's wrong with price? Why are things now hotting up instead of heating up? I could go on.....

I believe it means to criticise, put down, prove wrong. And 'Woke means just that, as in woken up to the truth/reality.

I think that trying to be 'on trend' language wise always sounds stupid when coming from the mouth of a mature person.
Certainly, my AC and GC don't seem to use anything but normal English although the younger ones probably hear it.

Like always things like throwing Santa comes from urban , kid slang And it definitely means that being conscious of underwear Just like being awake , in the know , or a bit more pompously in the zeitgeist . Good to use it would laugh if you tell them to come from the PC brigade Most of them wouldn’t know what the PC brigade was ! Don’t judge me but I use it along with “shook”. I want to be up to understand that the younger members of my family are saying so I instruct my husband all the time he doesn’t seem to be getting the hang of it . So we jokingly say “ I’m shook “. But he hasn’t got the woke thing That’s because it actually isn’t’woke’ about these things ?

Sorry I didn’t edit that last post and there is a lot of gobbledygook in it ! For example Santa was a mistake, it wasn’t a new bit of urban slang ! It should have said shade . Good should have said God. And should’ve said it came from not to come from etc. Must remember to edit instead of just scanning .

I live in the middle of USA and never hear these words in the way to which you refer. Shade is still the shadow of a large tree. How could one throw that?For woke- I woke up this morning to find that Trump is still in office and moaned. Please don't blame America for the wrong usage of the words.

Someone in a government department is probably spending days finding new phrases and terms to use just to keep the public thinking and wondering. Can't see what was wrong with the English language as it used to be.

Yes, even the Baby Royals are fodder for the media comments ! I had to look up "on fleek" , but it does in fact describe little Louis' eyebrows , they are perfect !
