Headscarves

I was told I had a big baw face and for goodness sake not to wear a headscarf !

I have a chiffon-type scarf, a long one, not square, to stop my hair blowing about when the roof is down on dh's car.

I like to think I look like Princess Grace, tooling along in a sports car, but I fear I'm more like Norah Batty or Hilda Ogden.

My mum had a similar collection oldbatty... and then of course there were the “rainmates”!

I don't think the chiffon scarf was meant to conceal them, more to keep them in place without making the wearer unduly warm.

I remember my mother wearing them, I also remember them being taken under the chin and then tied round the back of the neck, if that makes sense Or kerchief type scarves that were tied round the back. They could look quite chic in the 60s. When I went to church (catholic) females were expected to cover their heads, so there was often sea of scarves, and a few hats and then mantillas started to appear, but head covering has all gone out the window now.

My mother thought they were common inspite of the queen often wearing one.
I also had my hair done in rags by my gran and had lovely ringlets which hardly lasted a day.

I saw a very pretty young woman on the bus the other day..
She had curlers in her hair, with a headscarf on, and beautiful false eyelashes.
She looked like a film star.

Do you remember how we use to cross ove4 the ends and tie them at the back in the 60 s I think it was Tuesday Weld I first saw wearing them like that

There are a good many pictures of the Queen in a headscarf, but she is of that generation. We should be told if she wears one over her curlers. I never took to wearing one even in the early 60s when they were quite popular because it made me look like a clootie dumpling. One of my housemates insisted in wearing a white one with big sun glasses. It made her look like Christine Keeler.

My mum in her younger days wore a head scarf (Grace Kelly style)
My maternal grandmother always wore a hat (fur in the winter).
Both stylish ladies.

I remember my maternal Grandmother putting my hair in “rags” to go to bed (I am the only family member with straight hair)
