Watching Mrs Wilson has got me thinking about them. I have memories of my mother in a tartan one and she had everyday ones and special ones. Also she had the very thin one worn over her rollers.

Or kerchief type scarves that were tied round the back. They could look quite chic in the 60s. When I went to church (catholic) females were expected to cover their heads, so there was often sea of scarves, and a few hats and then mantillas started to appear, but head covering has all gone out the window now.
