Headscarves

I still have a rain mate. Never use it though! I went to Paris on a sixth form French educational visit and one of the monitors wore a cream trench coat with a navy silk headscarf. I thought she looked fantastic- just like Brigitte Bardot- so I immediately went out and bought an identical headscarf which I wore with pride, tied under the chin! Still have it. Don’t know if I resembled Brigitte
Bardot though!

SueDonim I hope that your 'car scarf' isn't too long. Isadora Duncan was killed when hers blew back and caught in the car wheel.

Rainmates, I’ve just had the most wonderful memory of my lovely mum wearing one and me poking fun at it - feeling so guilty about it now

At my age I remember so many things about scarves and hair curlers. My mother always put our hair in rags. In the 30s and 40s and 50s one never went out without a hat. My gran even put one on to go out to feed the chickens. In the WAAF our hair had to be above the collar so we rolled our hair up over a scarf. Chiffon and silk scarves were always square. I still have many. One was worn to brighten up a plain jumper. I still have rollers and a plastic rain hood.

I remember battleships grandtanteJE65. My grandma used to have those and I trapped my fingers in them many times!
I used to wear a headscarf folded up around my neck with the knot at one side - I thought I looked so trendy but used to get asked if I had a sore throat!
TK Maxx sell lovely head squares as well, in a variety of materials.

I don’t wear headscarves though my Mother did but if it’s any help to anyone looking for headsquares our local charity shop where I work always has plenty to choose from, Lovely patterns,colours and many of them silk,we sell them for a £1 each,expect most charity shops will have them.

DS and DDIL got me a square scarf last Christmas, mind you, it was a Versace! I have had to devise artful ways of tying it, as I am so used to the long ones. And I had Carmen rollers in the late sixties, and also a curled hairpiece that I could pin into the back of my head and pretend I had long hair that was elaborately swept up and curled! DMIL always had a rainmate in her bag.

The rollers had evil little plastic daggers that you used to attach them to your head.

Yes turbans, I had forgotten them.

I remember my mum in a turbin. Funny what things you remember.

I preferred sleeping with my hair in rags to the horrible hard plastic curlers my mother used. Anyone else remember battleships? Hinged metal combs like bull-dog clips used to make waves in your hair.

I remember the ones with the spots, a nice decorative touch!

The Queen rides on private property that is the difference.
You don't have to wear a seat belt when driving on private property nor a helmet when riding a motorbike or riding a horse.

My lovely mum always had a headscarf and if it rained one of those tie on rain hats that folded up like a sort of plastic concertina! You could always find one in her bag, and an old Trebor mint and an embroidered hanky! Happy days x

My mum regularly wore a headscarf.... her first date with my dad she arrived with hee curlers in and a headscarf covering them.... to be fair she thought she was meeting dad’s sister! Changed days indeed.... that would have been the early ‘50’s.... they were married over 6o years and I still miss them both terribly.

I used to frequently have a rainmate as a Christmas tree present!

My mother too, put rags in my hair at night. Not surprised I’ve always been an insomniac. My younger sister (wavy haired) was spared the ignominy.

mabonl- The Queen wears a scarf when she is riding, over the years this has caused many arguments between D and myself, as she thinks if the Queen doesn't wear a riding hat why should she Grrr!!!

Rainmates....alsl known as toffee papers because they looked A bit like the cellophane that came round toffees.

Ah yes rainmates- we had to take them to school to wear over our school hats if it rained as you weren’t allowed to take off your school hat.

My Mum always wore a headscarf, she didn't wear curlers under it like Hilda Ogden but she would never go out without wearing one . Most women her age did too. I saw a photo from the 60s recently taken in a market and all the middle aged women are wearing headscarves.
It's funny though I can't remember when that fashion changed and I had forgotten it until I saw the photo which brought back lots of memories.

Angel Strawbridge (married to Dick, bought castle in France) wears them often and wears them well, usually tied on top. She dresses the part and always with nice make-up.
Me? I definitely don't suit them at all.
