Cutlery Drawer

It is an odd question cherrytree - why on Earth is anybody interested in my, your or anybody’s kitchen drawers?
It’ll be knicker drawers next .

To add to that - perhaps my life since the days of TM’s summer frock (18 months ago?) has made me realise that there are things that matter more than other people’s trivial preoccupations.

I love the diversity of the topics on GN. I can empathise Maw that owing to sad circumstances in your life some of the topics discussed are trivial. But there are always more serious ones to engage with if you prefer too. Perhaps skip the ones that irritate you these days?

I am not against lighthearted threads, but there’s trivial and there is banal.
What with the interminable Games threads and the Political bun fights there’s not a lot else apart from MIL/DIL from Hell threads.
(I miss the the “old”Gransnet ?)

If anyone is interested: under my food prep area the top drawer stores items..inc. knives...for prepping food, middle drawer has items to help serve food and the 3rd drawer has the table cutlery organised into sections. I used to have a separate drawer for a posh canteen but since we had to let the butler go we have put it all in thr 3rd drawer! ? There is a 4th drawer which contains bowls, chopping boards, graters ..but that might deserve a new thread. By the hob is a pot with cooking implements!

And I’ve got two cat baskets. Does that count?

Is your cooking implements pot however on the right or the left of your hob PECS?

Maw it is on the left..though I am right handed. I have my pestle & mortar and condiments on the right of the hob. Should Irethink this?

Well OP did ask

I always use a divided cutlery drawer as it makes the 'usuals' easy to find. The other two drawers don't have dividers so I'm afraid it's 'anyhow' but not too bad.
Used to have a hanging cutlery thing but as it's just me now only the front ones would get used and the rest would gather dust and the whole thing would take up valuable space. Maybe it's a generation thing? With a full, busy household they're fine but for we oldies and sadly singles not so appropriate.

@Mawbroon this may be light hearted but trivial iyo but it's actually made me realise that I should get rid of some of it. Far too much stuff for two people.

Just a warning - I was rummaging in my utensils drawer yesterday looking for scissors and cut my finger on the potato peeler- blood everywhere. I didn't realise they were so sharp.

Daddima, we have a 'man drawer' for all batteries, instruction booklets, takeaway menus, elastic bands, odd clothes pegs, and other such junk. When in doubt as to where to put useful but undefinable stuff goes it's always the man drawer. I won't even mention the 'man cupboard'! Suffice to say we have to have clear out every once in a while when we can no longer get in there.

One of our potato peelers is a lethal weapon Fennel - I don't use it but DH likes it. It had a plastic 'guard' to go over the blade but that must have disappeared with the peelings!

I've just remember the huge plastic box in the cupboard which is filled with essential kitchen items eg potato ricer, pastry cutters, measuring spoons and cups etc etc, some of which never see the light of day!

I think this is a great post - thought provoking! Whoever thought cutlery could elicit such a range of comments. I have to say I'm jealous of anyone who has a pantry. If I ever move house [ha ha!] that would be my first priority

I use my "hanging" utensils on a regular basis although there's just me.
I also run the whole lot through the dishwasher every so often when I want to give the tiles behind the cooker a proper wipe down..

Has anyone else got a spaghetti serving spoon?

I'm just having a new kitchen fitted. We live in a retirement flat and the kitchen is VERY small. No drawers in the new kitchen so I have ordered a special box which is divided like a cutlery drawer and will live near the dining table. Wooden spoons ect will live in a utensil holder on the worktop. Just hope it all works.

What did GN used to be like? I’m genuinely curious. In what way was it better?
