when did life get so complex

So modern life is getting more and more complex. At one time you would go to the shop and buy a packet of, say biscuits. You took home the biscuits, ate them, and enjoyed them. Job done
Then it got to be the calorie content. Then it got to be how many syns for SW. Moving onto fat content for Rosemary Conley.
Things got more complicated when shops started BOGOF. Was it better to buy one packet in the Co-Op or two in Tesco? Cheaper with BOGOF but then two packets sitting in the cupboard shouting “eat me....eat me...”
Then there’s the wrapper business. Inner and outer packaging. Where do I throw it? Recycle or general.
Then, am I happy with the ethical background of this product. I boycott some manufacturers but with big companies buying out smaller ones and companies becoming part of huge organisations, it’s an effort to keep up.
So, I reconcile all this in my head. I find a pack of biscuits that I like. It fits with my current dietary regime (I know, I know-shouldn’t be eating biscuits).I’m happy to pay the going rate.
I buy the biscuits. Hurrah
I go home, make a coffee, break open the treat and turn on my laptop.
And there it is. Palm oil.
Maybe I should just give up on the biscuits

And the coffee shop chains! Latte, cappuccino, flat white, americano .... small, regular, large (size of a washing up bowl with 2 handles!) ... any syrup (nooo!) ... and what about sugar, white, brown, sweetener? In our take out? Loyalty card? Blooming heck you’re ready for a coffee by the time it comes!!

Bluebelle The world will be as complex as we humans chose to make it. When did self control fly out of the window?

Agree. Nothing is straightforward. Internet shopping is often very frustrating. You see an item. You add it to your basket. You proceed to pay. But first you have to register! You proceed only to be told you are already registered as presumably you have shopped there previously - possibly years previously. So you can't remember your password. So you request change of password. If you are lucky an email comes through at first attempt. You make several attempts to change password, only to be told it's not strong enough. Your next attempt tells you to add a number or a symbol. Finally success, and you can complete your purchase. This is, of course, assuming that your Broadband doesn't drop out just as you are about to pay. By this time, after tearing my hair out, i am wishing i'd just popped to the shops. We are told not to use the same password each time, but how are we supposed to remember password for each site? But couldn't believe my eyes when in WHSmiths recently amongst the diaries spotted books with 'internet passwords' printed boldly on the cover. So basically if you are burgled you are gifting the robbers your whole internet life.

I love a Gransnet post that makes me laugh out loud because it’s so true! Then how do you decide which tea or coffee to buy to go with the biscuits .... don’t get me started on that one!

Theoddbird Sat 17-Nov-18 12:42:46

Witzend....I only use one on my new washer...the fast one.

inishowen Sat 17-Nov-18 12:59:45

To add to my troubles I enter a lot of competitions. So I also have to check which product has the comp on, and whether I need to keep the packaging and receipt.

Saggi Sat 17-Nov-18 13:42:23

It’s not complicated .... I have about £30 per week to spend on food....when it’s gone ..it’s gone! See...not complicated at all. Can’t afford to count calories or fat content! I survive on it and don’t have a weight problem. Too much fuss made about food and shopping.

DanniRae Sat 17-Nov-18 13:43:13

Oh Juliet your story about flicking soggy biscuit into your friends ear really made me laugh - thank you! grin

annep Sat 17-Nov-18 14:17:22

Saggi sometimes I think you're right. Because choosing healthy food is complicated and does it make that much difference? £30 is quite a tight budget though.

EllanVannin Sat 17-Nov-18 14:21:52

I received my " proper " lightbulbs this morning and I'm thrilled. Never thought I'd be so excited over light bulbs !

Jalima1108 Sat 17-Nov-18 15:12:31

Bluebelle - grin

I thought I'd done well with my booking with Ryanair until it came to booking two seats together. First I chose DH's seat, click, done, then tried to book the vacant seat next to him for myself - in those two seconds the plane was full except for one seat about 11 rows back from him. hmm
I booked that then phoned to see if I could have two seats together- yes, of course, that will be £40.
(no I didn't change them)

Thank goodness I wasn't travelling with a child.

gillyknits Sat 17-Nov-18 15:36:15

Just got a new washing machine, (today in fact.) I think flying an aeroplane would be easier than the instruction for a simple wash! There’s turbo this and eco that! I like the ones that did wash, rinse and spin with a temperature control if you were lucky. Wonder how long this one will last!

TillyWhiz Sat 17-Nov-18 16:33:55

Petunia Exactly the same for me yesterday so I decided to finish the packet quickly and not buy any more!

Gaggi3 Sat 17-Nov-18 16:40:24

My particular hate in the choice game is toothpaste. Haven't actually counted varieties as it would take too long but there are a lot.

dianetheartist Sat 17-Nov-18 17:04:25

Monica,,, Screwfix sell led bulbs, they are really good... Warm white or bright light pretty sure it was a box of 4 or 5 for £9.99 we replace ours well over a year ago and not had any problems with them..

petunia Sat 17-Nov-18 17:10:30

Ho ho, you all make me laugh. Light bulbs and dunking, knickers and soap powder. The trials of life in the twenty first century?
One of the reasons I like to shop at Lidl/Aldi is that if you want a jar of mayonnaise, you probably find two sorts. Normal mayonnaise and maybe low fat. Go to the big supermarkets and there are umpteen makes of mayonnaise, a myriad of sizes, and a dozen offers-30% extra free, BOGOF etc etc etc. I feel the life force slipping away from me as fumble in my bag for my glasses, peer at the price label and compare price per ml. Then I’m working out if I buy the massive jar that’s on offer and is ml for ml cheaper than a normal size, where the devil am I going to store it. But if I go with the tiny bottle that’s a similar price, think of the packaging. Moving onto the tuna and I could cry. Is it better to buy 4 own brand in a pack or 3 branded in a packet on offer.
My oh my, I feel like buying a bottle of gin on the way out, but there are 14 different brands and 6 offers to work through. And then I’d need tonic.....

HillyN Sat 17-Nov-18 17:38:44

Not quite accurate, Petunia, Lidl do three sorts of mayonnaise: normal, light and lighter than light. I always get the latter- only 10 cals per tablespoonful!

annep Sat 17-Nov-18 17:50:24

the Internet shopping made me laugh. Its so true. Deep breaths and keep calm is sometimes the way. Some of my passwords are a bit rude because I lost my patience!

NoddingGanGan Sat 17-Nov-18 17:57:52

Make your own biscuits?

petunia Sat 17-Nov-18 18:31:02

rude passwords. i like it. you rebel annep. i may steal that idea

annep Sat 17-Nov-18 19:27:58

It made me feel better Petunia! ?

Further to my earlier Ryanair rant, I've just tried packing the new bag I was intending to take free on board with me. After I'd fitted in all the essentials - toiletries, one very light pair of ballerina pumps, chargers, Kindle, sunglasses, reading glasses, titchy handbag, umbrella, underwear and socks, documents - I'd enough room left for a pair of leggings and one tunic top. So now I've given up and ended up shelling out for the new bag, priority boarding for DH on the way out so that he can take the usual wheelie on board (I shall be standing in the non-priority queue - I know my place), extra for the wheelie to be checked in on the way back because there's no priority boarding left on that flight, which of course you don't find that out until you're more than halfway through check-in angry.... And checking in online with all our different requirements was a proper rigmarole. Added to which the Ryanair site was down earlier this evening, which did my blood pressure no end of good. Travelling used to be fun, didn't it?

Haven’t read all the posts so this may have already been covered, so forgive me if it has. Ordering a coffee in a cafe.

Can I have a milky coffee and a white coffee please?

Do you mean a latte?

No, just a milky coffee please.

We don’t do milky coffee, but we do latte’s. Ok, I will have one of those please.

Is the other one an americano?

No, just a plain white coffee please.

Ermmm, we do a latte, cappuccino, americano, blah, blah, blah, but not a white coffee.

I just want a black coffee with a drop of milk in it please.

Ah, gotcha, do you want cold or hot milk in it?

Oh my god, I just want two coffees, one normal, one milky!

No need to be rude madam, do you want small, medium or large?

Large please.

Oh dear, I did not realise a large was the size of a bucket!

I remember the day when going out for a coffee was soooo simple!!!

EllanVannin Tue 20-Nov-18 17:50:58

Ooooh I make my own mayonnaise----pretty moreish.

M0nica Tue 20-Nov-18 20:27:05

Magicwriter2016
