I'm used to seeing men wearing shoes in the summer without socks but last night at a formal golf dinner a young man had donned his blue suit, shirt and tie but wore brown loafers and no socks. Am I an old fuddy duddy who expected to see socks- if nothing else isn't it cold? Is this a new fashion which has passed me by?

My DH is 76 and avoids wearing socks unless we are going out. He has hyperhydrosis and can't bear having hot feet so leaves his socks off whenever possible. It is definitely not a fashion statement for him!

" No brown in town" was the snobby etiquette cry to imply brown shoes were incompatible with formal work suits. what is snobby etiquette about that? It was just a general dress code that earth colours belong in the country, no more snobby than women wearing hats and gloves, a dress code that pervaded all levels of society and has now been dropped as fashion changes,

DS got married in a brown Harris tweed suit and brown shoes, because he felt they reflected what he was more and suited his build better than traditional male wedding attire..

Can't help it - Stanley Holloway and Brahn Boots. My dad used to recite it!

Anyway the real mistake this young man made, given he had chosen the blue suit, brown shoes and no socks style was to wear a tie with it. It should have been open neck formal shirt and NO tie.

Wedding party male dress code at DDs wedding was blue suits with brown shoes. Both FOG and FOB found this very hard but complied cheerfully. FOB even reprised the look for the next wedding he went to (or maybe he was too mean to buy more new shoes??) However they were allowed socks so all was not lost!

Oh and they did have ties, pink bow ties in fact. First time in his life DH has ever worn pink.?
