Some very good posts here. We are 75 and have lived in this house for over 40 years, brought up our children and been very happy. Neither of us want to move - I have health problems but DH is fit as a fiddle and does most things, though we have a cleaner who washes and irons too. I'm scared of moving - DH is a hoarder and the loft and cellar are full. I've told our sons to get someone to clear it all out when we've gone. We also have a gardener and good r/ships with the sons and dils and enchanted with our grandchildren, but the very last thing is to ask grown children to help. One is in another country and 2 around 100 miles away. As far as home help is concerned, there is a problem because social services have had their budgets slashed by the tory party, along with all other public services, which means they can only afford to "buy" care from the private agencies, as they have to keep within budgets. It's not their fault, nor the agencies fault, nor social services fault, but the tory government cutting budgets and pursuing their agenda of privatisation is at fault.
My neighbour who lived opposite us for many years (she was a lot older than us) and she often came over for a cup of tea as she was very lonely. She had a son and daughter who visited but she missed her husband who died quite suddenly. Her son and daughter thought the house was far too big for her (it was a very big Victorian house) and they bought her a small modern house about a mile away. I used to see her standing outside her old house, walk up the road and return to stare at her house, sometimes she walked up the garden path. I use to bring her in for a chat and tea and many tears. She hated the little house and was so unhappy. The people in the house had noticed her standing outside andher house, so I explained to them and they were very understanding. My old neighbour died 2 years after the move.
