A friend sent me a link to THIS THREAD on Mumsnet which made for such poignant and thoughtful reading and afterwards I thought it would be really interesting to pose the same question here. So which one sentence changed your life? I will start with a happy one

Will you marry me?

It's worth reading the Mumsnet thread if you have time but definitely have tissues at the ready

My Dad (who was also my teacher) to the visiting school doctor at the end of a medical check up,”My wife and I think she is overweight.”
Thus began a lifetime of dieting. I was 10.

Thought I was commenting to an earlier person.

Greengran well done to your daughter. I'm sure you're very proud of her. I did do a foundation course afterwards, got a great result but decided not to go. My decision.

You should join the WRNS, (not the WRAF as I had planned). Took the advice and have been married for 48 years to a matelot. Without that suggestion I wouldn’t have my lovely children and grandchildren, and the country would be deprived of a police officer and a paramedic!

Do you fancy coming to see a film tonight? Said by DH the day before my birthday in 1969. Our first date. Engaged a couple of months later, married in 1972 and together until he died earlier this year.

To AlgeswifeVal, same as my love; 8 weeks from diagnosis to his death at 54. Life is hard ?

After having twin boys born with EB, and losing them both, I got pregnant again - despite all medical warnings not to have any more children, as there was a 1 in 4 chance that the same defect would be present. (But we were young and brave then.)

I gave birth to a second girl, who I saw just briefly before she was wrapped up and whipped away to be taken to a skin specialist who had been called to the hospital as soon as I went into labour. He was young Australian guy and had been waiting for 9 hours for my baby to be born. (They had to wake him up!)

After the longest time (probably 20 minutes or so) he burst into the labour room with both thumbs up, shouting, "She's perfect!"

My best sentence ever!

(Mind you, we were so lucky to have our first daughter 'perfect' too. But we didn't know it then.)

"If you REALLY want to meet ****(name of famous actor I was obsessing over!), go and do the EST training."

"Never undervalue your own currency."

Said to me by my tutor during teacher training 50 years ago. Amazing how many different situations it can be applied to.

A happy one - I said to nice boy at work that I wanted to see a film but sister had let me down. "Would you go with me?" he asked. We found we had so much in common and were married for best part of 30 years.
A sad one - DH had been asked lots of questions by a professor in neurology. "After looking at the answers my diagnosis is motor neurone disease. It's terminal, have you any questions?" Stark and business-like - it turned our lives upside down. We had to find a strength we didn't know we had. Heart-breaking.

Gmelon - mine too! Except it was spoken by my daughter aged 38 and with 2 tiny little ones aged 2 and 1. Five years on, thanks to PPMS, ALL of our lives have imploded!!

“Who wants to go to the pier with us”? Said to a circle of 9 girls where I was the last. They all said no and when it came to me I said no then this boy said “Oh but you are coming!” So I said “Alright then”! 50 years married next March!

"I'm going to the trade show and I'm not coming back" - from my husband after 35 years of marriage.

"You can only be treated as badly as you let yourself be"

I read it in the problem page of The Sunday Times magazine about 10 years ago. It resonated and it's made me think twice about putting up with any crap from anyone ever since.

And there’s your baby.
At the scan I was sent to with the doctor’s letter I’d steamed open saying he thought my baby was no longer viable.

PPMS It's tragic and a rotten deal in life. Your daughter being so young and so needed by you all.
I wish you the best hope that she can stay stable with minimal new activity.
I am so sorry. [Flowers] I wish I could several ones.

gmelon Thu 25-Oct-18 17:42:35

flowers I wish I could send real ones.

Good morning my lady.

This was a greeting I got every morning when I was desperately depressed during a divorce.
He never knew but it turned my life around reminding me I was someone loveable and worthwhile.

DoraMarr Fri 26-Oct-18 08:41:37

“Hello there.”

maryrose54 Fri 26-Oct-18 11:20:41

Who would you rather live with, dad or me? I was early teens and my mother left to live with another man. That was a trigger for anxiety and panic attacks which affected me for many years, only ending when I met my second husband who I have been with for 38 years. I never had a relationship with my mother after she left.
