What I’d do with the extra inch

Just an inch or so would make all the difference. Well it would to me. But before you get carried away, this isn’t a saucy suggestion. Sorry.
There are several ways that inch would be helpful
Being an inch or so taller. Oh I hate being short. And I seem to have got shorter as I get older. In a crowd, I’m the one jumping up and down behind the six foot six giant of a man standing at the front. And nowadays, if you go to a concert, although there may be allocated seating, the second the star walks on stage, EVERYONE stands up, and stays on their feet till the last encore. And even in tiered seating, I am craning and shifting about to even catch a glance of the person I’ve just spent a fortune trying to see. So an extra inch would be useful
Being a rounder shaped lady, the loss of an inch or two would make my life easier. An inch off the hips and inch off the tum. Long haul flights would be so much easier if I wasn’t concerned about my spreading hips encroaching on the person I’m sitting next to. Even worse if that person is broad around the beam as well. The whole flight becomes almost intimate as our bodies touch and warmth is generated. And an extra inch off my middle would make those accidental looks in the mirror more bearable. You know the ones. You are in an unfamiliar shop, you look around and there’s a short, chubby woman dressed like you. Only it isn’t a stranger, you have caught sight of yourself, sideways in a mirror. So yes, one extra inch off would be welcome
And finally, that extra inch I crave. Could it be on my legs please? I can never seem to find trousers that are the length of my legs. I so often end up hemming them or turning the cuffs over to fit.
Anyone else need an extra inch?

An inch or two on my neck which seems to have shrunk over the years. And please could I have about four inches off my waist so that trousers that fit my hips also fit my waistline?

gillybob Thu 11-Oct-18 12:41:43

I have the same problem with hips/waistline anno. I have no bum to speak of and very small hips. I struggle with skirts and trousers that fit my waist but are huge on the hips and bum. I think I must just be a weird shape.

ha ha.jessity. im with you there. ive never been 5ft 9 or size 8. why would i understand from that how that item of clothing would look on me. its meaningless unless you are 5ft 9 or size 8

GreenGran78 Thu 11-Oct-18 13:14:06

I’m just 5ft, and heartily agree with all the problems it brings. I have managed to lose a stone in weight, though. Only two more to go to get back to my pre-family size, but that will never happen!
The two things I would really like to lengthen, though, are my hands and feet. They are short and broad. How I would love to have them slim and elegant, with beautifully manicured and painted nails.
I am very lucky to be fairly fit, and very healthy, at almost 80, so I am certainly not ‘moaning’. Mabon1, I’m sorry, but I always think of you as ‘moany’, as you rarely seems to offer nice or cheerful comments to anyone.

mabom1 I am sure I am not alone here in living with a chronic painful condition and enjoying reading a lighthearted thread to feel just that little bit better for a while.

I can give you an inch or two if you like. I am always getting asked in the supermarket, "Can you reach me down that love " ?

Minerva Thu 11-Oct-18 14:25:02

Sorry. mabon not mabom

Jalima1108 Thu 11-Oct-18 14:26:20

^ I have no bum to speak of and very small hips^
That sounds like me - but oh so many years ago

Jalima1108 Thu 11-Oct-18 14:26:50

and I'm shrinking - downwards.

gillybob Thu 11-Oct-18 14:35:47

My tummy is expanding Jalima but everything else is staying the same . I know I need to exercise more but just not in the right place at the minute . Too many other things going on .

Jalima1108 Thu 11-Oct-18 14:36:50

I keep meaning to pull in my tummy muscles when standing at the sink etc, but seem to have lost them somewhere.

Am I unique in being at my tallest-ever, in my 60's? I was amazed to learn at a recent medical check up that I am now 5ft 6.5in - a full half inch more than the 5ft 6in I have been since approximately the age of 13! grin

luluaugust Thu 11-Oct-18 15:43:12

SueDonim I think you got it off of me, I have just been measured this week and have lost half an inch!

Daisyboots Thu 11-Oct-18 15:48:42

Being 5'10" I have never wanted an extra inch because I tend to tower over everyone. Now in my 70s I would have thought I would have shrunk a bit in height but no. So other than my arms I am quite happy to donate a few inches from everywhere. These past 7 weeks I have managed to lose 26lbs so that is helping.

Conni7 Thu 11-Oct-18 15:59:17

And why do M&S advertise "calf length" or "knee length"? I shout at the screen "Who's calf?". Sometimes it helps to be an invisible 5.1", but most times I can't see anything.

BonnieBlooming Thu 11-Oct-18 16:05:54

I have been shortening trousers for years as 29inch was too long and 27 inch too short. Then a couple of years ago at a medical I discovered I have lost 1.5 inches in height. Twas a blessing in disguise (It was accompanied by arthritis in my spine) as now 27 inch lenght is fine. Hurrah not more trouser shortening!!!!!

Bijou Thu 11-Oct-18 16:57:28

I used to be 5 ft 2 inches. My late 6 ft 1 inch husband always said good things come in small parcels. Now in my old age I am only 4 ft 11 and cannot reach top shelves etc which I find frustrating. I don’t wear trousers so don’t have the problem that other Gransnetters have.

midgey Thu 11-Oct-18 18:27:04

For those who are vertically challenged (like me) ankle grazer trouser are just brilliant!

PageTurner Thu 11-Oct-18 19:26:43

You wrote exactly what I would have written about me. I hate being so short. I should walk around with a folding stool strapped to my waist..

Jalima1108 Thu 11-Oct-18 19:33:01

SueDonim - do you hang from a rail at night?
That's supposed to stretch your spine!!

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 19:38:26

Could I swap 1 inch off by bust and put it on my feet? I have way too much books and way too small feet that I'm in constant danger of capsizing.

Oh mabon do lighten up dear. Being so dour all the time is tedious.

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 19:39:56

Books? BOOBS! what good would an inch on books do me?

Jalima1108 Thu 11-Oct-18 19:41:00

It just goes to show - we're never satisfied grin

Some posters want to be as tall as me - and I want to be 3" taller!

Maybelle Thu 11-Oct-18 19:54:13

Chewbacca I agree that life is more bearable with a little light heartedness. I seldom get out, rarely meet friends face to face and relish the conversations about trivia and joyous wanderings.

I have seriousness by the bucket load and whilst happy to support others who are having struggles personally I need a smile and a diversion.

And I am tall enough but am more than happy to donate and inch (or more!) From my waist to anyone who wants x
