Royal clothing!

Lizzyflip, I agree that Meghan is wealthy in her own right but Kate didn't really work before marrying William. Her parents may be wealthy but she won't see any of it until they die.

We have to remember that them spending thousands of pounds on clothes isn't anything to them. Its just the same as me spending my money in primark. It doesn't matter how much they spend on clothes as they have an unlimited amount of money.

How do you know Kate won’t see any of her parents’ money until they die? They may well give her a generous allowance, not unusual among rich families.

Don't care what they wear or how much things cost. Whatever they wear will be criticised by some people so they can't win - not that I'm a royalist by any means. Must say if I had lots of money then I'd wear expensive clothes too - I haven't so I don't!

A bit off tangent here but it might be interesting to watch Fashion's Dirty Secrets on BBC1 on Monday night with Stacey Dooley to see some of the real costs of today's cheap 'throw away' fashions.

I've always believed in paying a fair price for the best quality I could afford as clothing usually washes & wears better. At times that meant local jumble sale/charity shop finds for me (while the money went on DCs' school uniform basics) and, when things got a little easier, being able to afford better - usually good hardwearing brands bought at sale time. Don't let that fool you into thinking that I'm a dull dresser though, I love colour and putting outfits together and have an eclectic mix of clothing - even some of those early jumble sale finds!!

I always try to count the cost of clothes in price per wearing and because of that my 'best I could afford at the time' garments have usually been real bargains. There's no saving in buying a cheap garment that looks like a dish rag once its been washed.

It will be interesting to see what Stacey finds out and which high street retailers she names!

I'm not interested in what the clothes cost and find it intensely irritating that the media seems obsessed with stirring up controversy on the subject.
I want our royal family to look wonderful when out on Royal engagements. I love both Kate and Meghan's style though for me Meghan leads with her sense of style. She seems to gave quashed those Royal traditions of only wearing black for funerals, covered shoulders for daywear ( though I saw a picture of the queen as a young woman in a sleeveless dress) trousers for official duties and so on.
The queen always looks fantastic but as she always wears the same outfit in a variety of bright colours we wouldn't know whether she'd worn the same dress, coat, hat before or not.
Princess Anne is famous for wearing the same dress twenty years later, good on her!
So can we please stop carping about the royals, I believe we're lucky to have them, and so do many other countries who either got rid of theirs or never had a royal family.

If they can afford to wear the expensive clothes then good luck to them.
Me,can’t even afford the charity shop prices so wait for my daughters to pass down the clothes apart from shoes,they are all size 5 while I am 1 1/2-2

I think both The Duchesses look extremely elegant, whether they are on royal duties or "snapped" informally.

I wonder where clothes they longer wear go they can't keep them all !!

Grannygravy13 totally agree. I’m proud to have a Royal Family that brings millions of pounds into the U.K. every year.
Maybe some people who would like the Royals to “go away” would prefer a President Trump?

I think they are sold through upmarket dress exchanges, with all marks that might identify them as owned by royalty assiduously removed.

Both Megan and Kate have had to adapt to situations where they are expected to dress far more expensively and conservatively than they have ever done. Because of that they have to build a beautiful and suitable wardrobe for all occasions , that costs money , but if they appeared at some state occasion dressed inappropriately there would be absolute outrage

Expensive clothing is usually very good quality and well made. It will last much longer than cheaper shoddier garments.

At least 15 years ago short of everyday trousers for school, I bought a pair of navy blue Elvi (now defunct) trousers, £70. I thought I'd made a stupid 'tired after work' and 'desperate for 'useful' trousers' mistake.
I hadn't - they machine wash, dry overnight or sooner, and are still my go-to trousers.
As the saying goes 'they owe me nothing'!

Is anyone wishing they were a royal duchess with money to splash on clothes? Me neither! They'd soon be criticised if they wore the clothes I wear most days!

When the female Windsors make visits to other countries new clothes are a must. Wear a dress to Canada and again in Australia use to be considered to no no,

What surprises me is not that they spend large amounts on clothes, but that the clothes in question actually cost as much as they do!

I will confess I am as guilty as the next person of buying cheap clothing but I do cringe when going into places such as Primark,Matalan. I can't but see the container ship offloading all the cheap basically rags we buy. Royals may well spend a comparatively huge amount on clothing but do they buy as much as us minions. Sure their clothes last a lot longer than ours do due to the quality. Some are even known to have clothes re-styled rather than disposed of.perhaps in the long run they dont spend as much as we think

We all vary in the emphasis we put on clothes and fashion. Being on a low income my clothes are usually the cheaper end of High Street, last for many years and I am shocked by the amount many 'ordinary' folk spend on clothes, but everyone has their own priorities. Interestingly, I volunteer from time to time giving out clothes to the homeless with the Salvation Army. Some of the guys who come to us turn their noses up when offered something which isn't fashionable enough, while others are simply grateful for anything warm that fits!

Would we still have a royal family if they ceased to look like moneyed aristocrats?

I don't really care what they wear or how much they spend but sometimes I look and think that is really boring and 'samey' (if there is such a word) and is probably not worth the cost.

I hate to comment on politician's clothes but is it only me that finds Theresa May's short box jackets and lumpy trousers quite hideous, not to mention the chainmail round her neck. Sorry but she would look better boring. Just my opinion but now waiting for chorus of abuse!!!!
