Royal clothing!

I’m very surprised at the cost of clothes shown in newspapers, three figures for a pair of trousers, several hundred for a coat, don’t know where people get these huge sums.

Have just paid £75 for a dress to wear to husband’s 70th. Birthday party tomorrow. Couldn’t really believe I had parted with so much money. Rarely buy anything full price and this was discounted.

However hardly anyone will be looking at me, and the way the royals look is highly scrutinised and criticised.
I think it’s a no win situation for them.

Grandma2213 I agree about TM's clothes - she seems to have such long gangly arms and legs and her outfits don't seem to suit.

To be honest I don't really concentrate on what the Royals are actually wearing other than to think they look nice and have never been bothered by the supposed cost. I'm more envious of their figures and hair. If I could afford it I would buy more expensive clothes particularly shoes and boots but I shop in a variety of places including TV shopping channels and pay low or more expensive depending on what it looks like on me.

When my sons were small my friend dressed her children in designer jeans and very expensive shoes and coats - we couldn't afford to compete so mine were in hand knitted jumpers, cheap jeans and shoes mostly from the catalogue I ran. I always felt bad for them but you pay what you can afford.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but where do the royals get their money from? Some of it from the estates that they own maybe. And inherited wealth.
And do they have an income voted for by Parliament? In which case that's from our taxes.
I'm always suspicious when I hear that someone comes from a wealthy family - how come? We worked hard for years and yet we're not wealthy.

Exactly Fennel and as for the folk who keep saying the rest of the world is jealous of/would love a royal family like the UK's...what a lot of nonsense the rest of the world who got rid of theirs found out very quickly that a president is cheaper and easily got rid of when his term is up.Here the ever expanding Windsor(or insert their real German name) costs the taxppayer more year on year .Its a disgrace that people still want to support this out of date system .I dont understand why anyone with half a brain thinks they are so superior to the rest of us that they "deserve"to be so privileged.

no-one said superior - they do a job and are paid for it. As for countries with presidents, apart from one or two, the most stable countries are those with monarchies.

I enjoy the monarchy as a sort of soap opera. A presidency has no continuity or history behind it, so can’t provide soap opera to the same degree.

I’m not convinced anyone thinks they are essentially ‘superior’ to the rest of us. They have a higher social position, that’s all.

If they have the money (wherever it came from, that is not what this thread is about) then whether they spend some of it on looking the part is beside the point.

Would those who are horrified rather they didn't look the part, but wore holey jeans and a dirty T-shirt to posh weddings, or to meetings with other heads of state where appearance is part of impressing the hell out of them? How can HM upstage Trump if she doesn't wear something at least as classy and expensive as his missus? What would he then say about HM and Britain in general? Third-class country that he doesn't need to bother with?

I agree; the clothes make a statement about Britain as much as about the wearer.

Kate was dressed quite appropriately for her recent visit to a school but she wouldn't wear jeans and boots to a state banquet where she may have to sit next to President Jintao or other dignitaries.

No, I don't feel irritated, shocked or uncomfortable at all. Some outfits are expensive, some are High Street and we do expect them to dress to a standard when they appear in public on official engagements, but whatever either of them choose, someone will criticise

Don't really care what they spend but cannot see any need for a Royal family anyway. Why should taxpayers keep a family as they are special people? They are just ordinary people same as everyone else.

I don’t understand why “anyone with half a brain” thinks that anybody does think the RF “so superior”. Personally I like some of them, don’t like others, like what some wear, don’t like what others wear. I don’t think any of them “superior”.

Do we know the price of the clothes worn by any of the other people at, for instance, Harry and Meghan's wedding? Or does the anti-monarchist wing of the media make certain that we know to the penny what HM's and Kate's cost without comparing them to any of the other equally well-off guests?

I doubt Mrs George Clooney bought her outfit from M & S.

Ah, but the difference is, Amal Clooney may well pay for her clothes with the fabulous sums of money earned from her legal work, which brings me to another favourite topic; the eye-watering sums charged by the legal profession.
(I actually don't mind the money spent by the royals on clothes, provided they are suitable for the purpose and are seen to be working. Hence my dislike of the York sisters, as they now call themselves.)

Where is this anti monarchist wing of the media ,Elegran seems to have passed me by.All I see is a great big publicity machine grinding out stories that make them look good,almost superior beings and seem worth having.If it weren't for the media a lot more folk would see the reality and understand why so many countries dont want or need royalty.
