How much is a loaf of bread?

I bought an unsliced large seeded loaf from Sainsbury and at breakfast DH said ' this is nice how much is it?' 'Not the faintest' I replied. It used to be the sort of thing people kept an eye on- does anyone here without looking know what the price of their bread is?

I bake all my white bread, as I can bake six loaves for the price of a shop-bought one, which tastes a lot less than half as good.

I buy the cheapest packed of sliced rye bread I can find and pay the equivalent of 60 p for ten slices.

Hovis in Morrisons 1.05 or 2 for 2.00 at the mo, their own brand of wholemeal bread is 53p i believe. We prefer the Hovis but sometimes resort to the own brand if no medium sliced Hovis available, we dont do the thick cut.

A bit off topic but, how do you freeze/thaw bread?! I don’t eat that much of it but occasionally fancy beans on toast and end up throwing most of the loaf away (even the small ones). I’ve tried dividing up the slices and putting them into freezer bags but, when I defrost them, they just turn to mush! I don’t have a microwave, so is it the natural thawing process that makes them go that way? I don’t mind the wasting money as much as the thought of throwing away food when there are so many hungry people in the world. (On the other hand, I don’t want to give up my beans on toast comfort food! smile ) Any good tips Gransnetters?

You freeze whole sliced loaf in its wrapping. Take out one or two slices and put straight in the toaster

I pay about £1.60 for a Brennans sliced pan. It seems very expensive but it's lovely bread. I've heard Lidl are going to stock it, so wait with anticipation to see what they charge.

I either buy from my local shop (he gets it from our local baker's shop), 99p for small uncut white or £1.10 for small brown seeded uncut or I buy from Co-op, I love their Vintage Cheddar & Onion bread which is about £1.80. I also buy other loaves from Co-op ranging in price from £1 - £1-90. I don't eat lots of bread & never buy mass produced bread.

£1.19; interestingly I asked DH how much he thought his (I don’t eat it) favourite Danish butter cost, - answer ‘about £2’, he was shocked when I informed him £5.50, no suggestion of looking for a less expensive one though!

I have a small Lakeland bread maker. Just make the dough, half whole meal half white and this makes two small loaves. Also make fruit loaves. Freeze bread. I don’t like all the additives in factory made bread.

Danish butter £2 for 2.50grm.

I’m not sure either how much a loaf is, but sure as, it will go up this winter. The grain harvest is down because of the drought in the south. My son in law is getting a good price for his grain, but ourselves who have livestock to feed through the winter will have to pay out an extra £3000 this year. Swings and roundabouts!

We are not eating bread at the moment but when we do we buy a sliced multigrain wholemeal loaf which has 16 slices and costs €2.39. So not cheapfor 680g I shop online for my son's food in England and his favourite sliced tiger bread is £1 a loaf or two for £1.60 from Iceland.

My husband has a large seeded bloomer from our local bread shop each week -£2.35!
Like MawBroon it is sliced and frozen and lasts a week.
I have a wholemeal thick sliced loaf from Lidl's -45p
I freeze it so that too lasts a week.
I used to love Chelsea buns but am so appalled at the price that I won't buy them now.
Iced buns which used to cost pennies are now well over £1

It all depends on what you refer to as 'a loaf' wink!

My OH likes either 'Best of Both type' or 'Granary' - but he's fine with having supermarket's own brand of both - so it's from 55p, up to £1.40 for his bread.

I'm Coeliac, so bread is an entirely different 'ball-game' for me. I can 'get away with' as little as £1.20 for a small, 'supermarket own brand Gluten Free Loaf' - or up to something like £3.20 for a very nice (but not very big), 'Warburton's Gluten Free Artisan Loaf'.

45p for a wholemeal loaf in Lidl. Premium is 79p. I eat lots of bread, Sandwiches with nice fillings and the fillings come from Lidl, as well. Easier to find British food in Lidl than the main supermarkets.

Asda own brand multi seeded brown sliced loaf, 85p.

Warburtons, £1.35.

While I was clearing out my Mum's house I found an old advert from Kwik Save from when they first opened a store near her, back in the 1960s. It promised that they would never charge more than 1/11d (9 1/2p ) for a loaf! Needless to say, they didn't keep that promise! grin

Feelingmyage55 Sat 22-Sept-18 15:56:00

Depends what loaf I am buying as to whether it's fresh off the bakery, on offer etc. Anything from £1 upwards usually

HurdyGurdy Sat 22-Sept-18 16:30:18

I am in the very fortunate position at the moment (three adult household, all working full time) of not having to be overly cautious at the price of groceries (although I am very aware that the amount being handed over at the checkout every week is going up and up).

I think the bread I like is about £1.45 a loaf, and I know, from buying milk for the office that a four pint bottle is just over £1.

I have just reverted back to buying proper butter, having used olive spread for years, and nearly expired on the spot when I saw the price of it! I now make sure to stock up when I see it on offer.

catwoman Sat 22-Sept-18 16:56:21

Asda 50/50 bread is one pound. Suits us & grandchildren eat it as well as it has no seeds!!

catwoman Sat 22-Sept-18 17:26:24

Any post I put up always disappears next time I look. What am I doing wrong?

Maggiemaybe Sat 22-Sept-18 18:27:47

Around £1 for a large loaf, slightly more or less depending on what we fancy. I was paying around £1.50 a few years back.

I’d also noticed that sugar’s gone down a lot lately, midgey.
