Get rid of the canopy and take an umbrella?
Then you will have more control.

Is it legal to have a knife on you? Pehaps a pair of scissors would do? You wouldn’t be trapped for long you could just go into a shop or to a neighbour and gesticulate that you cannot open it. You are just a worrier like me, or you could say that we are very good at forward planning for emergencies!

You could always stay at home if it rains, and wrap up warm with wooly hat and gloves and a warm blanket, (and HWB) when it is cold.

That was not a helpful thing for him to say! Bit like the district nurse whocam in to check my OH's pressure areas (he has PD) and she asked "Are you incontinent yet?" - brilliant!

I should try and put what he said out of your mind - I know people who use the canopies with no problem - one is always driving down the main road here - on the road - a bit risky I feel!

Presumably you do not have to have the canopy up at all times.

Try to think about how great it is going to feel when you have used it, how proud you will feel for having tried something new, the independence it will give you, not having to rely on others, the pleasure at doing things at your own pace when out.

It will always be too hot,cold,windy,wet or foggy in your head.

Is there not a similarly mobilised neighbour or friend who could go out with you perhaps? They seem to travel in ‘gangs’ around here! Not unusual to see 5-6 trundling along together.

Very scary when they stop out your house for a natter. But if I thought they were ‘tooled up’ with knives, and machetés, etc I’d be calling the police,,

You can get gadgets to cut through a seat belt if it jams (now there's another unlikely scenario to worry about if you run out of steam on this one!) I've not seen one in use, but if the canopy is fabric they would probably cut through it.
There is also a pointy hammer end on it, to smash a window in an emergency.

Luckygirl, sorry I did laugh about the district nurse, what a question to ask . The canopy has to stay, it is attached with steel rods, took two men to fit it on, come to think of it, if it took two men then little doubt it would take one woman, yes? ?. My ? is a pavement and road one.

Elegran, now you’ve done it, there are no seat belts, hadn’t thought of that ! Canopy is very stiff plastic, I have a craft knife, think that will do, surely a craft knife isn’t classed as an offensive weapon . ?

Gosh what are you going to do on the scooter that means you will get stopped and searched! Hope you enjoy yourself when you do get out - go for it.

My brother just called, I asked if a stanly knife would cut the thick plastic, he asked why, well he asked ‘ why the hell do you want to cut it’ ? I explained I would feel safer if I knew I could, he replied -

Assuming it’s a standard papercrafty type knife Annie, it very much is classed as an offensive weapon.

Likewise a stanley knife.

Have a wee look at some safety cutters if this keeps bothering you x

Take your phone and if you get trapped call someone . You wont EVER need to cut yourself out I absolutely promise you :-)

I know this is a huge thing for you but take it from one who has been using a scooter for some years I have never had a problem. This is your escape pod.... go on...get driving :-)

Hi Annie, just do a very little journey first to build up your confidence. Then each time you go out just go a little bit further. It worked for me when I felt like you do (walking not on a scooter) and I will never forget the triumph I felt when I managed to get to the top of the road - cross it (this was a big deal) - and go and buy some carrots!! You will feel that triumph when you manage to go out on your scooter and imagine how thrilled you will be when you come on here to tell us. GOOD LUCK!!

If really stuck inside and there was no-one about to assist you could ring 999, make their day. But honestly, these things have been well tested . Please do have a test run, then you'll be ok.

I have changed the name of my scooter from Blubird to - - - - FRED.

Fred was my next door neighbour for nine years, he was a darling , illnesses in his old age didn’t stop him , i was devasted when he died.

Small scissors are often carried by mobile hairdressers, I take hair scissors my bag to cut my mother in law's hair.

I also have a small pair of folding scissors.
Easily and safely carried in a pocket.

How about a sign that you take with you saying

“ Help! I am a prisoner in a scooter!”
