I recently bought an album by the group 'Madness' and heard a song called " Shut Up "
It included one of the funniest lines that I have heard for a long time:

" I'm as honest as the day is long.
The longer the daylight , the less I do wrong".

So Gransnetters, the ball is now in your court. ??.

Till there was you, sung by the Beatles
“There were bells on a hill but I never heard them ringing
Never heard them at all, till there was you” etc
My boyfriend, now husband of 49 years, used to sing this to me but always got the words just slightly wrong “...they never stopped ringing, till there was you”!

Jalima; Never heard of him till now, but Dr.Google said he's dead then resurrected him, so who's "never gonna give me up?" You, I hope! Otherwise you won't getting any more Aussie witticisms. wink
No! I'm not patronising as some might say; just a compliment, hopefully to ward off any Monday morning blues! grin
Btw; What's this about us having a new PM, "yet " again.? Anyone would think Aussies make a habit of it. sad

You're the One for Me Fatty. I am pretty sure that was by Morrissey! He's had some wonderful songs and is a fantastic wordsmith!

Fabulous thread. I’m thrilled to discover so many who appreciate Leonard Cohen. Impossible to choose one song as he was a true poet but Famous Blue Raincoat is high on the list annep.

Going back to re read, some of these are so evocative of various times in my life.

*Six rain-ridden summers and he still had an eye for me
He kissed me each evening and told me he’'d die for me
And then he ran off the road, full of whisky and irony
He always meant what he said*

"Empty skies say try to forget.
Better advice is to have no regrets.
As I tread the boulevard floor, will I see you once more"......

The Paris Match by The Style council ( Tracey Thorne Version is just amazing )
Very, very atmospheric.
Check it out gransnetters, it is a gorgeous song.

She may be the beauty or the beast
May be the famine or the feast
May turn each day into a heaven or a hell

thankfully it ends

And where she goes i’ve got to be
The meaning of my life is
She

SHE

The moment I wake up
Before I put on my makeup
I say a little prayer for you
While combing my hair now
And wondering what dress to wear now
I say a little prayer for you

Moon River sang by Audrey Hepburn - Mums funeral

I also have a soft spot for I had a Dream from Mamma Mia(Amanda Seyfried).
Along with the Slipping through my fingers, which Meryl Streep sings to Amanda Seyfried hen getting ready for her wedding (Mamma Mia)
