I think women should stop curtseying. Men don't curtsey. What's wrong with a handshake?

At the time of her accession many Scots set about deleting the II from our coronation mugs, post boxes, etc. arguing that she was the first, not second Queen of Scots.
Yes, that's true, just as your James VI was our James I of England.

Imagine the outcry if her maj or one of the firm went to America to be greeted by a giant nappy wearing blimp ?

muffinthemoo Mon 13-Aug-18 12:51:45

Probably a similar level of outcry if Prince Charles announced he would visit America to “grab women by the pussy” or call all Latino Americans “rapists” and “gang members”. Or perhaps endorse the Klan.

muffin grin
(although it's not funny)
Have you seen the other thread about Ed Balls in Trumpland?

Jalima1108 Mon 13-Aug-18 12:55:40

I'm not sure why HM would be greeted by something like that gillybob as Americans seem to love our Queen - and even more so now they have their own Duchess

muffinthemoo Mon 13-Aug-18 12:58:28

I did, Jalima. I’ve been enjoying the series, actually. Balls has the (more awkwardly expressed) gift of Louis Theroux for winning people’s confidence regardless of their circumstances.

Honestly, if he had run for election as himself rather than his own image of a serious politician, he would have been returned comfortably. God knows we need people of strong intellect now from across the party political spectrum.

Jalima1108 Mon 13-Aug-18 13:00:59

I wonder if he'll come back?
Perhaps he's enjoying himself too much now, and leaves the serious stuff to his wife!

gillybob Mon 13-Aug-18 13:08:57

I agree Jalima I think that most Americans perhaps have more respect than to greet a head of state in such a way . Doesn’t say a lot for some of us Brits though .

Technically and democratically, PA, the people are 'sovereign' throughout the UK. And the Queen is our figurehead, admittedly whether we like it or not. I think most people do like it or, at least, happily put up with it because a good alternative is not on offer.

Jalima1108 Mon 13-Aug-18 14:51:18

When someone called Boris Johnson one of the ruling elite on another thread, they misunderstood totally the role of our MPs:

MPs are servants of the people and should never forget that, said ANN WIDDECOMBE

I don’t feel they are Superior, but the title or position deserves acknowledgment and I don’t feel too Superior to acknowledge it.

Anniebach - I don't like the way you refer to The Queen as queenie.

Anniebach Thu 16-Aug-18 08:28:03

Sorry you don’t disaprove tassiegran

OldMeg Thu 16-Aug-18 08:33:34

‘Queenie’ is quite mild. My BiL calls her Betty Windsor!

gillybob Thu 16-Aug-18 08:34:52

Makes her sound like an old barmaid OldMeg grin

gillybob Thu 16-Aug-18 08:35:56

Can’t see a problem with “Queenie” at all, it’s from Blackadder isn’t it Anniebach ?

Anniebach Thu 16-Aug-18 08:36:58

OldMeg ?.

I don’t call the queen queenie as an insult, some think I do.

Anniebach Thu 16-Aug-18 08:40:29

Yes Gilly, I loved Blackadder, no difference saying queenie to saying i’ve got a cunning plan, ?

janeainsworth Thu 16-Aug-18 09:07:01

I rather like Brenda (as in Private Eye) for HM.

Anniebach Thu 16-Aug-18 09:10:14

I had forgotten Brenda ?

Mapleleaf Thu 16-Aug-18 10:27:34

This may be incorrect, Annodomini; but my DM, who was in the WAAFS during the war, said that when saluting, you weren’t saluting the person, but saluting the uniform and that it was wrong to make a salute if the complete uniform was not worn. Perhaps someone who has been in the forces can say whether this is correct or not.
I know she used to get irritated when watching some war films if the actors portraying members of the forces made a salute to someone else in the film not in full uniform! ?

Anniebach Thu 16-Aug-18 10:36:27

I think you are right Mapleleaf

Mapleleaf Thu 16-Aug-18 11:20:14

Thank you Annie - it was something at the back of my mind which came to the fore, so to speak, after reading the other post. It’s many years ago when DM said it, and I was wondering if I’d perhaps got it a bit mixed up!?

janeainsworth Thu 16-Aug-18 11:30:28

Mapleleaf that’s interesting. Perhaps it follows that when someone curtseys to the Queen they aren’t curtseying to her as a person but to the office of Head of State?

Anniebach Thu 16-Aug-18 11:42:56

I asked someone who works in the Windsor household about the curtsying and bowing. It is to do with ‘the crown’ , when Charles becomes king Harry will be expected to give William a nod because William will be heir to ‘the crown’ .
