Stop curtseying

The crazy rules for the royals are for themselves only , not for the public , thank heaven

There certainly are some crazy rules regarding curtseys and bowing to the Royals.

Apparently Meghan has to curtsey to Andrews daughters if she is on her own, yet when she is with Harry, they have to curtsey to her!

Interestingly our dentist is, I think Iranian. Whenever he greets me, and when I leave he puts his hands together and bows his head to me. A lovely gesture.

A royal biographer , forgotten his name, was given time to speak to Anne , whilst they were talking Anne took a phone call, she answered and did a bob, then had a quick exchange of words, it was her mother on the phone ?

I asked someone who works in the Windsor household about the curtsying and bowing. It is to do with ‘the crown’ , when Charles becomes king Harry will be expected to give William a nod because William will be heir to ‘the crown’ .

Mapleleaf that’s interesting. Perhaps it follows that when someone curtseys to the Queen they aren’t curtseying to her as a person but to the office of Head of State?

Thank you Annie - it was something at the back of my mind which came to the fore, so to speak, after reading the other post. It’s many years ago when DM said it, and I was wondering if I’d perhaps got it a bit mixed up!?

This may be incorrect, Annodomini; but my DM, who was in the WAAFS during the war, said that when saluting, you weren’t saluting the person, but saluting the uniform and that it was wrong to make a salute if the complete uniform was not worn. Perhaps someone who has been in the forces can say whether this is correct or not.
I know she used to get irritated when watching some war films if the actors portraying members of the forces made a salute to someone else in the film not in full uniform! ?

‘Queenie’ is quite mild. My BiL calls her Betty Windsor!

I don’t feel they are Superior, but the title or position deserves acknowledgment and I don’t feel too Superior to acknowledge it.

Technically and democratically, PA, the people are 'sovereign' throughout the UK. And the Queen is our figurehead, admittedly whether we like it or not. I think most people do like it or, at least, happily put up with it because a good alternative is not on offer.

I agree Jalima I think that most Americans perhaps have more respect than to greet a head of state in such a way . Doesn’t say a lot for some of us Brits though .

I did, Jalima. I’ve been enjoying the series, actually. Balls has the (more awkwardly expressed) gift of Louis Theroux for winning people’s confidence regardless of their circumstances.

Honestly, if he had run for election as himself rather than his own image of a serious politician, he would have been returned comfortably. God knows we need people of strong intellect now from across the party political spectrum.

I'm not sure why HM would be greeted by something like that gillybob as Americans seem to love our Queen - and even more so now they have their own Duchess
