Purplepoppies, good wishes to your mother for her recovery. She's a year younger than I am, so really not that old! She's very fortunate to have a daughter like you.

Coffee and the washing machine. I could live without any other domestic appliance but the washing machine is the greatest invention of the 20th century.

A lot of these are things we like very much, as opposed to things we can't do without.

Purplepoppies Really hope your mum improves and you are right our parents, family and friends are the most prescious things in our lives.

I could list a whole load of stuff probably.
But... I'm staying with my mum this week. She hasn't been doing so well for a while and it's shocking how quickly she's aged and become frail (76). She's having a surgery in 4 days the hopefully will mean she can do without the pills that are affecting her other ailments so much, and should restore a bit of normality for her.
So my answer above all else is my Mum ❤

I am amazed that so many people have echoed the OP and named their kitchen knives as indispensable as I would have chosen a knife myself.

It is a semi serrated knife which cuts through vegetables like butter. I have had it for forty years and it is known in the family as ‘Pete’s knife’. Recently, the wooden handle finally crumbled. Thanks to the Internet, however, I have located a Sheffield cutler who is going to give it a new rosewood handle for £35 which is expensive, I know, but will be worth it to me.

I bought one of those sellotape dispensers Grandmama a couple of years ago in a cheap book shop. It is a heavy duty desk top one and cost just 99p. It is absolutely invaluable.

Recently I bought a sellotape dispenser. It's solid, was not expensive, and has saved many an expletive when wrapping presents, securing envelopes or not being able to find the end of the sellotape.

PLain, cold tap water. I drink so much water.

Things? Glasses, mascara, books.
People? Too numerous to mention.

My radio. Hate the thought of life without it. BBC Radio 1, 2, 4 and 4extra accompany all day and night!

Cutting it down to the bare bones, it would have to be my migraine medication and my tweezers.

Just packing our share of a picnic with friends. Someone else is doing the salads - but I’ve put in a small jar of personal mayonnaise just in case! I think that needs to be on my list. Salad without mayo - unthinkable!

My old potato peeler with a wooden handle. I bought it in a charity shop to replace one I'd lost. It's exactly what I want in a peeler.
