I heard a song this morning on the radio I haven't heard or thought about in ages. It bought back memories of my first real boyfriend and i can even remember where we first heard it, the name of the pub (The BlackBird in Hertford) we were in and how we always played it on the jukebox whenever we went for a drink. Non alcoholic for me as only 16 and i still dont drink to this day. It was called Jesamine by the Casuals. It was such a powerful feeling this morning hearing it and has create a longing for those carefree days in my life.

Hated Sugar Sugar. I loved The Monkees (good songs, a lot written by Neil Diamond), and The Who. And Love Affair with Everlasting Love. Oh, and Marmalade.

Two other songs you couldn't escape from around that time were Green Green Grass of Home and Release Me. Ugh!

A very old memory, though I haven't heard this song lately: WW2, we were living with grandparents.
Granny played the piano and made me sing to her friends, Bless This House.

Amen Corner, we loved them! Saw them at the Royal Albert Hall. I had a crush on the bass player. My friend and I set out one Sunday to find their house. We'd read it was in Harrow on the Hill and we found it due to Andy F-L's Marcos car outside! We were too timid to do anything like knock though. We just hung about.

I think all girls on the record counter in Woolworths played top of the pops on Saturdays , as I remember it clearly too, MiniMoon

All the usual suspects from 60s and 70s. And every summer there was Tom Jones. Pussycat, Green green grass, Delilah. The last was in UK in 67, Italy in 68 and Greece in 69. Je t'aime and Lay Lady Lay definitely Oxford days.

Much later I heard an Egyptian playing a brilliant version of the Stevie Wonder song I just called to say I love you, one evening on the banks of the Nile at Luxor. Wow.

I have many memories with songs and tunes significant to where I was and what I was doing .One in particular is by The Letter Men with The Things We Last Summer. It reminds me of days walking through the fields, in a summer which seemed to go on forever, then relaxing on the river bank with a certain young man of the moment. If I want to drift back into the past You Tube provides me with this.

Musn't get carried away.!

A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procal Harem, takes me back to the long hot summer of starting senior school!

Led Zeppelin Whole Lotta Love - instantly takes me back to dates with my husband when we were 15 as does Je'Taime. We saw a Led Zeppelin tribute band a few weeks ago and he loved it (he hates my music normally) and Cream's Disraeli Gears reminds me of a previous boyfriend. I too loved Amen Corner and saw them in the local theatre as well as the Move and Free. Honey by Bobby Goldsboro makes me think of hiding my radio under the bedclothes, any of the Monkees songs reminds me of an old friend and playing in her front room and even earlier Rawhide or the theme to Bonanza lying in bed at night waiting to hear them from downstairs. All the old songs of the 60's have special memories but equally modern songs do too. Too many to mention - I've seen so many bands over the years.

I've been an Elvis fan since I was 14, (now 76) 2 friends gave me a ticket to see an Elvis tribute as a birthday gift. we went about 3 weeks ago, it was really good and I knew the words of every song, strange that some things I want/need to remember I can't but the words to the songs I can remember. Other things I remember are our telephone number when I was a child, the number plate of my Dad's first car (I was 10 at that time) these are things I will never ever need again but I retain the memory.

I didn't think of that surprise 'gig' he did, as although technically 'The Phil' is a pub, we only ever visit when we're going to eat before going on to 'The Philharmonic Hall', or 'The Everyman' Theatre.
Next time we're there will probably be 17th September as we'll be seeing 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' in concert!
If you ever find yourself in the Hope Street area of Liverpool, go to 'The Philharmonic Pub' and ask to be allowed to see the Gents loos, they're amazing!

Wonderful post. So many of those songs stir vivid memories for me as well. Although its funny how it seems to be only songs remembered from about the age of 15 up to perhaps the mid twenties which bring back these type of memories. I can't really say that songs which became popular as I got older have the same effect when I hear them now. It could be because life becomes serious when you hit the mid twenties, marriage, homemaking and children take up your time, and lying on your bedroom floor on a Sunday afternoon listening to Top of the Pops with your friends becomes a thing of the past, probably replaced by shouting up the stairs to your own children to turn the music down. smile

I am listening to my local radio station at the moment, and every afternoon they play music and news-clips from a particular year, the aim being to guess the year. I am in seventh heaven at the moment as today's year is 1966 - I was 21 and it was my last carefree year/summer as a student, such memories; the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, Mamas and Papas. That heady summer when we all yearned to be in San Francisco! (with flowers in our hair...) Ooh, they are just playing one of late DH'S favourite songs - Nancy Sinatra 'Boots'. Happy days.....( Hope I'm right with the year!)

I was one of the first female judo teachers in Liverpool, and taught a class at our local youth club. We shared the hall, with various other activities going on at the same time. Cliff Richards had just released his first hit record, and it was played constantly. Whenever I hear "Move It!" it is accompanied, in my mind's ear, by the sound of bodies crashing down on the mat!

Blue45Sapphire Mon 30-Jul-18 16:03:29

Glad to say that I was right with the year being 1966!

Lemongrove, forgot all about Whiter Shade of Pale, loved it and reminded me of my hitch hiking days around Europe. We went into a club in Amsterdam because it was playing just to stand and listen before being chucked out because we were wearing sandals. True carefree days.

mancgirl Mon 30-Jul-18 16:45:46

So many happy memories of times and places when you hear these songs. Always seemed the best songs were in summer but maybe not. Thinking about where I first heard them at around 15/16/17 years old. My first clubbing days in Manchester, Rowntrees, Portland Lodge, once, unknown to my mum, even went to the infamous Twisted Wheel. Thought I was really cool but still had to be home by midnight!!

Lindaylou55 Mon 30-Jul-18 16:47:01

I hated Love Grows and still do to this day, my first boyfriend dumped me to go with an 'older' girl who was called Rosemary. Lol. I have got Amazon music on my ipod and any time I hear a song I loved back b then it's right on to it.

HannahLoisLuke Mon 30-Jul-18 17:37:41

Brian Jones was lead guitarist not drummer Travelsafar but yes I agree how these songs take you right back. I think the sadness we feel when we hear them is because we're mourning our lost youth. I'm feeling it especially at the moment as I've very recently lost my beautiful younger sister and some of her favourites were played at her funeral, Moody Blues Go Now and Nights in White Satin will forever have me in tears as we were always playing the records together back then.

maytime2 Mon 30-Jul-18 18:02:33

What I have found by browsing through You Tube are famous songs re-recorded by other "stars". e.g. Much prefer the Cliff Richard version of " Come Prima" (don 't know the name of the original Italian singer) and Brenda Lee singing "If you loved me, really loved me" originally sung by Edith Piaf.
Sorry I'm not technical and can't post these threads myself for you to listen to. When you think that both Brenda Lee and Helen Shapiro had such strong voices at a young age....
Another song that is never aired is the Elvis song "Young and Beautiful " from Jailhouse Rock". That is my favourite Elvis song.

Loved the 60s especially the Beatles and Stones era.
I was greatly amused to hear recently that a well known boy band (all in their early 20s) had disbanded because they were " burned out and exhausted".
Well excuse me, Mick J. is 75 and the rest of the band all over 70 are still touring and performing 2 hour gigs without a break. Paul.M. 76, has just written and released a new C.D aged 76.

Apart from the Beatles (I was a fan) one of my favourite songs is Cliff Richard and The day I met Marie' - still sends tingles down my spine at the start.

The Beatles “Penny Lane” - 1967.
I had just become engaged and life seemed unbelievably wonderful.
It’s funny - every time I hear this song I smell the verbena soap of which I was very fond at the time.
Memories are so strange. I’m loving this thread !
