I was talking to a friend about memories and how much we remembered of our childhood. I can’t remember much at all just little bits here and there. She thought I was odd. I can’t remember much of my teenage years either. How much can you remember? Is it an age thing? I’m 67.

I used to have crystal clear memories. My friends from school whom I still see over 50 years on used to be amazed at how i could recall stuff from our mad teenage years but once I was in my 50s that ability started to decline and now at 68 when I remember things it seems to be memories of memories if that makes sense. Another strange thing is sometimes I have a memory but don't know whether it was an actual event or a vivid dream which is a bit disconcerting confused. Maybe the old frontal cortex needs a good de-fragging! I did read something last week Wilma about the key to a happy old age lies in forgetting so it's not all bad ?.

Anyone hear the interview on R4 (Today) and in the DM with the scientists who have studied early memories and have shown that while we can remember things that happened after the age of 2. Memories before that age are made up of a mix of family stories, photographs and possible later memories.

I was at the dentist for a check up this morning . It’s a very modern state of the art practise but going through the door I had a horrible flash back memory of being a young child and getting a tooth out with that awful gas . It scared me for years .

gillybob that has brought back a dentist memory to me -
when I was a child our dentist was quite fat and he used to have to hold my head against his tummy, which felt like a pillow. He was a Scot, a jolly fellow.

My sister who is 4 yrs older never seems to remember about things we both should know.
That was the house I was in when I was born and we moved away when I was about four or five.
Going to the doctor in a gloomy surgery and he gave me some small bottles.
The snowdrops under the tree in the front garden
Me getting seen by the window cleaner with my face plastered in mum's lipstick.

Being sick on the swings when my sister and cousin took me across the road to the park.

My dad re-pointing the bricks in the side of our house and our cat following him up the ladder.
My sister did join in playing on the building sites and pushing over newly built walls. but she was about 11 by then and getting too grown up.

Criminal damage yes but there was no supervision after the site had closed for the night in those days.

If anyone had carefully explained to us how much damage we could have done to ourselves and others we would have really felt ashamed of ourselves.

We were just enjoying ourselves. Children do not usually think of such consequences

Oh those times were brilliant fun.
I find it strange that my sister does not seem to remember.
