I think I’ve got it if my word has a plural form. I followed Maggie’s thinking

Jangran I'm not convinced there is a plural form of the word - or indeed a need for a plural form! But this was a clue in a respectable broadsheet newspaper many years ago, so who am I to disagree

I haven't done any cryptic crosswords for years, so I'm rather out of practice. Struggling with your one Eglantine, but I'll keep trying.

Love this thread. I do the i cryptic crossword most days, or at least I struggle with it till I can complete it. That may take more than a day. Re the Grauniad, I agree some are easier to get to grips with than others - which for me remain forever inscrutable.

Even when you see the answer you can’t work out how it got there.

Hoping this thread will help to educate me .

I can always see where the answers come from but just not always before they are printed the next day!

I still mourn the demise of the Guardian's Araucaria! I sometimes find that a clue I can't quite fathom in the morning presents a solution at bed time!

My son and I used to compete to do the Monday Guardian cryptic. We had to stop because nothing much got done on a Monday till it was finished.

I thought the US guy one might be something like Gratuity.... But does guy mean bloke, or joking, or rope as in tent?

Ah, I hadn’t thought of guy rope. Rope of course is there in perbo, but there’s still a b left over...
