Evening all, hope you are all tickety boo.

I posted a while ago a bit of a moan about the sounds of summer, i.e strimmers etc.

Well, this evening, there has been the sound of a tractor in the field at the back of our house, cutting for silage.

As I walked up the stairs the gorgeous smell of freshly cut grass was coming in through the open window in "the office". The lovely smell pervaded the whole room and the landing too.

As I type, the tractor has finished for today, but there is still a faint smell of grass, and no sound apart from the owls.

Life isn't all bad, just sometimes you have to look for the small things.

Agree with you, phoenix

Tonight I'll be drifting off to the gentle thrum of an irrigator - potatoes in the field behind our house.

The bird scarers are another matter though grin

How come I saw the title of this thread and immediately thought, with a smile on my face, hmm - bet that's Phoenix. You definitely have a certain style to your writing.

Yes, all tickety boo here and I enjoyed a lovely walk back from visiting my parents-in-law this evening, smelling the delights of night scented stock, jasmine and heavenly honeysuckle along the way. I was accompanied by The Wonderful Man and the sounds of the local football club raucously, singing their delight about England getting through to the next round of the world cup! wink

Do you remember the gentle sound of non-mechanical lawnmowers? So much more relaxing than electric, petrol mowers (though, admittedly, harder work).

It's the little things that make your heart sing. It's the little things that make you cross.

Having my morning coffee in the garden listening to the sound of the bin lorry but it’s such a glorious morning I care not a jot. Only the sound of birdsong now, bliss.

Luckygirl Wed 04-Jul-18 08:45:34

The smell of new-mown grass - lovely.

I have picked some of my sweet peas and they are in a jar next to me now. Every waft is a real excitement, as it has always been my dream to grow sweet peas and this is the first year it has been possible - so they are a great delight! smile

My golf course is bare - the ball runs beautifully and I got my best score ever yesterday!! and saw a lovely big hare!

Omaoma57 Wed 04-Jul-18 10:07:47

One mans grasss....another mans hayfever....hee hee

Overthehills Wed 04-Jul-18 10:13:41

Sweet peas for me too. And I’ve just been out and cut a big bunch of mixed flowers as well for the house - first time I’ve been able to do that in our “new” house.

humptydumpty Wed 04-Jul-18 10:14:07

I love the gentle perfume of seet peas, brings back very happy memories of childhood summers. Note to self - must grow some! Has anyone else noticed how flowers in general don't seem to have the lovely perfume I remeber? - I'm thinking particularly of sweet williams....

We live ten minutes walk from a city centre but away from the busiest roads so it is surprisingly peaceful. There's woodland not far away, so we also have visits from deer on the small green outside our kitchen window, and less welcome visits from badgers and healthy looking foxes.

The centre of our city is in a bowl, surrounded by hills and quite prone to pollution, but up on our hill the air is fresh and clean.

My DH decided to sand the garden bench last Saturday morning and couldn't understand why I asked him to stop and do it during the week. He is the first to moan about electric lawnmowers at the weekend or in the evenings, but when else can working people mow their lawns?!

mabon1 Wed 04-Jul-18 10:39:53

You have a field at the back if your house, lucky you and don't moan, think about those who spend their lives in high rise buildings,

Does the Football World Cup count as a Sound of Summer?

I can’t go out in the heat so my gardening gets done from 7pm until it goes dark, obviously not using anything electrical or noise making.

Last night as I weeded and watered I could follow the England Columbia match all the way through from the collective groans and shouts coming from up and down the street and then the final whoops of joy when England won. I have no idea of the score.

humptydumpty Wed 04-Jul-18 10:58:10

Are you living without broadcast media, Minerva!

This morning I went into the garden and picked a colander full of peas ,then I sat on the patio and podded them.
They are for our evening meal of posh fish and chips.
Salmon fillets baked in the oven with a topping of parmesan, parsley and fine breadcrumbs.
A glass or two of chilled white and what more could I want.
Well I won't answer that but it is pretty good.

Yesterday afternoon the wind got up for at bit, and there was the lovely sound of my neighbour's washing snapping in the wind. She'd been washing bed linen.

Later my other neighbour was sitting in her front garden talking on the phone and brilliantly recalling the anecdote about Winston Churchill who was heard by some-one speaking very loudly in the adjacent room. This man asked some-one else who the Prime Minister was talking so loudly to and was told "Oh, that will be Edinburgh". "Hasn't he heard of the telephone?" was the reply. I was wondering the same or rather, why my neighbour was using her phone at all.

merlotgran Wed 04-Jul-18 11:23:38

My sweet peas are lagging behind this year so I've given them a liquid feed this morning to buck them up a bit.

DH has gone fishing so for a change I think I'll actually sit in the garden with my book and turn a blind eye to all the jobs that need doing.

grandMattie Wed 04-Jul-18 11:28:47

Love the smell of cut grass.
We have tractors going past the house all the time - from about 6 am to about 9 pm. It's a small town, and we are just outside the walls, though it is still quite built-up. I really don't mind the noise as it shows that we can still grow our own food. Besides if we do, we need to have tractors, noise and smells!

sarahellenwhitney Wed 04-Jul-18 11:28:56

Today at 7am looking through my countryside bedroom window when brilliant sunshine streaming through the curtains had woken me up I witnessed a wonderful sight There right in front of me were two fallow deer chomping away at my lawn. These deer are gradually being driven out of their natural habitat, looking for food, and which I fear can only increase when observing the UK country side turning into a concrete jungle.

123kitty Wed 04-Jul-18 13:27:16

You lucky lot. Flower pots on the windowsill looking out over the concrete city for some. Don't care the sun's shining- all's well.

Luckygirl Wed 04-Jul-18 13:41:39

My jar of sweet peas also has in it some lovely fronds of grasses that I have grown, and also some fennel - I love using that in jars of flowers indoors.

Nanny41 Wed 04-Jul-18 13:56:10

Smell of freshly cut grass is lovely, also the scent of sweet peas, I must grow some next year.
I love going out into the garden and picking flowers to put in a vase, one of the joys of Summer, long may it last!

vickya Wed 04-Jul-18 14:04:31

"less welcome visits from badgers and healthy looking foxes."
cc why don't you welcome those as much as deer? We have local foxes and I hardly ever see one but love to do so.

patriciageegee Wed 04-Jul-18 14:09:50

Love sweet peas too and on monday managed to buy 3 bunches from a lovely man selling them outside his house by the river in Bakewell...bliss!! And I agree with humptydumpty - flowers, especially bought flowers, nowadays mostly have no fragrance at all and those which do have a very chemical- smelling undertone probly due to genetic modification and cultivation for looks rather than perfume...ooh the heady scent of freesias so sad not to smell them any more hmm
