Last night I made paprika chicken to have with rice and green beans. Chicken was almost cooked, beans were steaming away so I put 2 pouches of rice in the microwave and put the chicken and beans on the table. Opened first pouch of rice into a serving bowl and then went to put in the second which sort of plopped into the bowl. When we looked it had the whole body of a fish, sort of mackerel sized, minus it's head, tail and innards in amongst the rice.

As I said, yuck, yuck, yuck!!

kitty do you think we need a new curse for this horrendous experience?

Eloethan Wed 06-Jun-18 00:07:32

That is revolting.

That’s awful! I am a vegetarian and sometimes buy a pouch of coconut rice or lime rice for a home made Thai curry as it speeds things up! This would have made me physically sick and probably had to throw all my meal away ?
can you say which brand it was? After all if environmental health are aware it’s hardly libel and I think many of us would like to avoid this brand? I certainly would. ?

Yes please phoenix!!

As it was a supermarket own brand, I imagine that they are all made in the same place.

Yuck indeed! My worst was a piece of smoked haddock with a live parasitic worm on it.

Reminds me of the tin of apple tea I bought at a well know tea shop. We’d enjoyed apple tea on a holiday to Turkey and I couldn’t wait to get some over here. When I opened the sealed tin it had around 5 dead cockroaches laying on the top. To make bad things worse, because I’d bought the tin in Oxford but opened it at home in a different county, the Public Health department couldn’t do anything and the shop, well don’t get me started there, were absolutely unconcerned, although I’ve never darkened their doors again!

That's horrible. What flavour was it? I have bought that pouches in the past, but not sure I will now. I have an unopened Spanish rice pouch in the cupboard but don't want to open it now! shock

This made me chuckle (sorry) and think of the saying - "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade" - kedgeree anyone? grin

But I agree - yuk.

HootyMcOwlface Wed 06-Jun-18 11:28:50

I had a ton of cat food once which was absolutely rank. The smell made me physically sick and permeated the house for days! Absolutely foul! I was so furious I parcelled it up and posted it back to the manufacturers to complain - there just wasn’t the words to explain how awful it was! Let them smell that too, I thought!

HootyMcOwlface Wed 06-Jun-18 11:29:07

Tin not ton! Oops!

Marianne1953 Wed 06-Jun-18 11:46:37

Lesson learned, cook it yourself from ingredients you have bought.

icanhandthemback Wed 06-Jun-18 12:12:27

Urgh! I've started cooking my own rice again (albeit in the microwave) as I am cutting out fats and was horrified to find it was in the ready cooked rice. Glad I am now!

Grampie Wed 06-Jun-18 13:03:32

Kindly identify the batch number and name the product so we can avoid the same experience.

Thanks.

How to make plain, (unseasoned) cooked rice

Use approx. 2 cups of liquid for 1 cup of white rice.

Combine rice and water in a saucepan (with a thick bottom) and give it a stir. Bring to a boil, then cover and low simmer for 12 minutes.
After 12 min., turn off heat but leave the cover on for about five more minutes for rice to 'set'' (rice will absorb any remaining moisture).

Here's an easy rice recipe (from scratch):

1 cup dry, long grain white rice
2 cups of water or chicken broth
1 tsp butter
1/2 teaspoon salt (if desired) or measured to taste
Add seasonings (see below)

Suggested seasonings (all or some of the following): 2 or 3 tablespoons of grated carrot, 2 or 3 tablespoons chopped red bell pepper, 2 or 3 tablespoons diced celery, 1/4 cup chopped onion, and 1 minced garlic clove. When rice is cooked and ready to serve, toss carefully along with chopped fresh scallions (or chopped parsley) for garnish.

Method:
Same as for plain rice. Turn on the heat and bring to a boil. Drop in onions, garlic clove and other seasonings and stir. Allow to bubble for about 1 minute then cover and reduce heat to a low simmer. Cook covered rice (on low simmer) for 12 to 15 minutes

Do not remove the cover right away. Let rice rest for another 3 to 5 minutes. Uncover and add garnish. Toss rice carefully with all the ingredients before serving. Yields 2 to 4. Enjoy!

Note: You can add more liquid if you prefer a more 'mushy' consistency.

No more pouches!

I'd like to point out that I do know how to cook rice - packet rice is was just easier!

It's back to proper rice now!

icanhandthemback Thu 07-Jun-18 09:12:45

kittylester, you can get a plastic microwave rice cooker where it is nearly as easy as the packet rice. I've started cooking my own, bagging it up and putting some in the freezer for when I want it quicker than that though.

kittylester Thu 07-Jun-18 09:19:41

I've ordered one ichtb but thanks for the tip re freezing it!!
