I think this is quite common,especially when they haven’t quite settled into retirement, but you say he has been retired for some time, so there could well be an underlieing medical issue, has he shown any signs of being less confident or capable than he used to be ?

I was merely sharing something I thought amusing to make you smile. 

It is a bit like being run over by a steam roller so you just have to laugh instead or else you cry. Just as well that we are very fond of our friend and our garrulous relative because that is just the way they are and clearly will never change! Would we really want them to?
