Hair salon disaster!

Just a thought. Does your hairdresser have a facebook page? You could threaten to post a pic of your hair with red stripes.... Might get them to rectify pretty sharpish!

As Oldmeg says I would definately ring the salon Manager and complain and get them to put it right.

Going public on twitter or facebook can be very effective as they won't want other customers put off.

Red highlights over grey hair isn’t a good look unless it’s very subtle. Sounds like your hairdresser is pretty clueless and dogmatic.
Don’t try to correct this yourself as you’ll end up with a murky mess and probably some damage.
A good hairdresser will be able to sort this out but you need to find one first. Have you any well groomed friends you can ask for recommendations?

Azie09 - please tell us the name of the hairdresser who made such a hash of it, the name of the salon and where it is so that no-one else on Gransnet goes there and has the same experience.

When my colour wasn't right. I told the Owner who cuts my hair and he said I should have rung him and he would have sorted it.

I went to have my foils done last week. The usual girl did it bug for some reason she asked if I wanted "it combing through to the roots" had no idea what she meant, I had never been asked this question before. Instead of highlights I have the copper colour all over. Not too keen but everyone says they like it. Why on earth she asked the question when I never have it done I don't know

I am lucky in my hair is still its original colour at 79 it is in the genes, my Mum still had auburn hair when she died at 98!

I know what tin foil half a head means because it's what I have done on my 3 times a year trip to when I go to the hairdressers. I'm surprised your stylist didn't run through a colour chart with you before she started and talk you through how the various shades can look, it's surprising that some manifest themselves darker or lighter than the samples shown and that needs pointing out. I'm sorry for your bad experience OP, it's quite crucial to know what the end effect will look like, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise quite honestly, I think I'd complain.

As someone else said, hairdressers have an awful lot of power over you. I had a particularly disastrous hair treatment a few years ago and when I phoned the salon to complain and see if it could be put right the manager was very insistent that i should go back to the same stylist which I didn't want. Eventually saw the manager who did make it look a lot better but I still think he only entertained me because I had my husband with me. Very difficult to be assertive when it's your looks that are involved but I hope all goes well for you.

I’m really beginning to resent my hairdresser....he’s getting on now ...like me...and whe I first went to him 20 years ago he really sorted my hair out. I was SO grateful to him I stuck with him! But now! I feel trapped. He’s not seeming to do anything I want. I’ve had the same colour for years , but last year I fancied it a bit darker ...that’s a no-no to him. All grey must be coloured blonde! I’ve aked and asked about going back to my brunette color but he just says it will be ‘ageing’...I’m 67 and don’t mind looking my age! He seems far too controlling but how do I just drop him after all these years! Also his prices are getting way over the top!

I'm wondering if you could had a base colour put on to hide the grey, I have this done in conjunction with highlights, whether that would blend in better with the existing ones you are not happy with until it all grows out. Perhaps you could ask the salon to do this free of charge considering the hash they have made.

You are the customer, bad hair can ruin your self esteem. I’m 65 and have brunette, copper, small amount of blonde highlights and it makes me feel good. I went blonder and I looked awful.

Saggi what nonsense "all grey hair must be coloured blonde", my base colour on my grey roots is mid brown, which was my original tone and I have caramel highlights to break up what would be a block effect. I agree that if you go too dark it can look ageing, but for heavens sake there are lighter shades of brown. I'd change hairdressers, as you say, he's set in his ways.

I would not go down the fb shaming idea I think that’s a really poor idea you are doing the right thing by speaking to them personally and with a back up crew far more adult and dignified

No they don't. We're the ones with the cash! You tell them what you want and if they don't do it you ask for it to be remedied.

I hate going to the hairdresser but since I can’t cut it myself I have to endure it. I went to the same place for years but it changed hands and the young man who took over made a mess of my hair and I looked like a zebra after he had done highlights! So I have been trying a few different ones and fingers crossed think I have found a decent one. DH can’t understand the fuss, he goes to the same barber every month and pays £8 for a haircut, ears trimmed and a discussion about football thrown in!

I wish I could cut it myself, not just colour.
Fed up with the prices hairdressers charge, can anyone recommend a DIY cut it yourself book & do any grans netters cut their own hair & colour.

I have full head foil, just highlights. My hairdresser mixes up 3 colours, light brown, and 2 shades of blonde. That mixed with my own grey and brown just make it all blend in somehow. She is very experienced and makes a good job. You do need to go back and get it sorted. Don't cut it yourself. It can be easily put right by an experienced hairdresser, although it would cost ££. Which is of course why they need to sort it. They should never have left you looking like that.

gretta you would probably be better off finding a hairdresser that is advertising for models. Although you get a trainee they should be well supervised so you should end up looking ok when you leave. I think most people would find cutting their own hair very difficult. Home colouring is now much better than it used to be so perhaps have a look at the semi-permanents that are about?

My hairdresser showed me how to cut my hair, I have it very short and in layers. When I am away for 3 or 4 months out in the back of beyond I just can’t get it cut. So over the 10 years I have cut it myself and now cut other people hair when away. Back home I have a passport size photo that I take to the hairdressers to show them how I want it, as for colour got fed up with that and just went grey or white in my case.

A lot of colleges have training salons where the price is reasonable and every stage is supervised. I have a regular hairdresser but if she ever gave up I would definitely go to a college salon.

Azie, I'm puzzled about why you ever went back to a hairdresser who you describe as being a bit sulky and difficult when she'd previously cut your hair?
Personally, I'd find it really uncomfortable to put my hair into the hands of someone I couldn't establish a rapport with and they wouldn't get a second chance.
But good luck for your trip back there today and I hope the disaster can be rectified.

I find many stylists!!! are patronising and make you feel they are doing you a favour.
My hair is in dire need of a makeover but if honest I am more relaxed visiting a dentist than a hair salon.

I've also had colour disasters, the worst being orange stripes! I've now gone au naturel for several years now, and am a sort of silvery colour, which I'm told suits me., so I'm happy with it. Good luck at the salon, stand your ground, hopefully you'll get a more senior stylist who will sort it out.

Ring to make appt with owner/manager to discuss your hair. Explain you're not happy. S/he has to see the problem to negotiate sorting it. Don't accept that they say you've washed it a lot, so it's not their problem.
Half head is having highlights put in not all of your hair, but usually the front from the crown forward and sides. Tin foils are just the means of wrapping sections of your hair to take the highlights (rather than the alternative - meshe)
