I am at a total loss sometimes when I hear my Grandchildren speak. Words that they use in every day language are a mystery to me.

However, during the recent cold snap, I mentioned I wore a Liberty Bodice when I was younger and I had to explain it to them. They had also never heard of Fish Kettle.

Are there any words you remember that would have to be explained to the children.

Button A and Button Below in a public phone box. Actually, public phone boxes in general. We've just had the last one in our area removed. sad

A joke not understood now:

'What do you do if you are chased by a herd of elephants?'
A: - 'Dial Trunks and reverse the charge!'

The first joke I remember hearing ( I think I was about four at the time) was "when is a door not a door? - when it's ajar" It took me years to understand the pun, and even then I didn't think it was that funny.

Remember the party line on the phone. The line was shared with a neighbour, and you couldn't make a call if she was using her phone. But it was cheaper than having a line all to yourself. Now even kids have their own phones...

I was helping at an old people's day centre, some years ago. In a quiz, they were asked "How much was a crown worth?" Blank looks all round.
So I asked " Well, how much was half a crown?" Instantly got the answer 2/6 so a crown must be 5/-.
